Tuesday with Tara {take 133}

Happy Tuesday y’all!

Have you been watching all the exciting new product releases at the Creativation 2018 trade show?  I know my Facebook feed has been full of inspiration and videos showing the booths and fabulous new products… lots of drooling going on here!  It’ll be fun to see new stuff arrive in the store in the coming weeks & months!

We just finished having a big snow storm over the past week here in NC, and I was going to share a snowy card with you… but right now, flowers are more appealing!  So, I’ve got some art journal pages that started out at the Dina Wakely class I took several months ago instead 🙂  Dina showed us this technique (supposedly a background, but I can’t bring myself to cover it up) for abstract flowers, all about being loose with your brush & paint and letting the flowers come to life without over thinking the design… it’s harder than it sounds!

I started with a solid blue background, then roughly painted my darkest layer with a wide brush.  I added a lighter layer over it (notice the fabulous streaks I got painting over the wet layer) and finished with yellow centers.  I added leaves the same way, going from dark to light green, then brought in some umber for accents of brown.  Around the flowers, I added a layer of white-ish paint (loosely mixed bits of elephant and umber into it) and while that background was still slightly damp, I removed some of the color through a stencil with a baby wipe.  It adds such a fun texture- I love it!  I discovered that Scribble Sticks are simply AMAZING for adding splatter to a project… seriously, just flick the tip of the crayon with a wet brush and you have this awesome, vibrant splatter spots!  I love it, so of course I had to finish off the page with a good splattering!  (And did you see… theres a new set released! Yay for more colors!)

Here’s a closer look at the textures on this page with just some simple, abstract painting… this is on one of the handmade watercolor paper pages in the Media Journal.

As I worked on my page, I started wiping off my paintbrushes on the facing page in the journal… then picked up leftover paint on my palette (aka the craft sheet that was my work surface) and filled in the entire background with random bits of color, then added a few details and a word… and eventually a completed page was born!

And here’s the two pages as they sit, side by side, in my Media Journal:

I had fun creating these abstract florals.  To be honest, I didn’t love it at first… but it’s definitely grown on me, and I’ve been playing around with different brush sizes for a completely different look!  I hope you like it, and maybe it’ll encourage/challenge you to stop thinking and just CREATE something.  Try abstract florals… they’re kinda fun!  And keep an eye on the store to see some of the new products available for pre-order!  There’s so much exciting new stuff coming up, it’s going to be a creative year!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara (take 81)

Happy Tuesday!

Today I`ve got something different to share with you… it`s by no means a new type of project, but it`s something I haven`t created for years and I`ve never shared any with you before- today I have a few ATC`s to share!

An ATC is an Artist Trading Card and it`s a mini piece of art (2.5×3.5 inches) designed to be traded.  I recently reconnected with some stamping friends I met online probably 15 years ago, and one of them had the great idea to host an ATC swap. The only guideline we were given was to use postage stamps as our inspiration… Here are a few of the ATCs that I`ve made so far for our swap.  I selected a couple rubber stamps to be my focal point- these funky birds are by Magenta, and I thought they would look great in black & white with a bold watercolored background.  I want each card to be unique though, so I`ve played around with a variety of colors, all created on Watercolor paper with Color Burst.

Since these are so small, there wasn`t much room to add details or embellishments!  I added a bit of Distress Ink through a stencil and a simple text stamp under some washi tape to frame the vintage postage stamp I finished them off with.

It was hard to capture it, but the birds have a light shimmer from Perfect Pearl Mist.

Here`s two more ATC`s I made with the same supplies.

My close up shot of these shows off the Perfect Pearl shimmer a bit better…

These were fun, and I`m looking forward to creating the rest of my set to swap… it`s great to be doing something NEW for 2017 and I can`t lie, it`ll be great to get some happy mail!

Now a side note… have you been keeping up with all the sneak peeks of new products coming out at the Creativation trade show (formerly CHA)- there is a bunch of fabulous new products, and I`ve been having a ball watching Tim Holtz share his on Facebook live.  I`ve shared a few links on our Facebook page, so check it out!

Here`s hoping you have a fantastic, creative week.

Inky hugs,

Tara

Day 3 at the CHA – It was all about stamps!

Good morning everyone!

Sorry I didn’t post anything last night but I just ran out of steam after another full day at the show. By the time we had dinner and came back to the hotel I was so tired I don’t think I could have put a cohesive thought together so I thought it would be better to wait until this morning to show you some more pics. Yesterday we placed orders for lots of stamps and our day started with Northwoods. Pat, the owner or Northwoods, took a few minutes to demonstrate the coloring technique that they use and gave us some tips and tricks. I will be making a YouTube video after I get back so that I can share them with you. Knowing how they use the Tombow markers (which we will be bringing in) will make it easy for you to recreate the vibrant look they have ont heir samples. Here are just a few of the stamps we ordered…

Our  next stop was at the JustRite booth where Kelly Fortin showed us all the new stamps and dies that they have come out with. YUMMY! You are going to love their new designs.

They have come out with a nice variety in cling and clear to tempt us and another sentiment set that is going to be very popular. Here’s a peek at some of the samples they have on display…

Here’s a few other things that we discovered yesterday…

For all you ProMarker & Copic Marker fans we have found the ultimate storage system from ArtBin. It holds tons of markers in a case with a handle so it’s completely portable.

Any of you that have lots of dies like Spellbinders or Memory Box we found another storage system with magnetic sheets in binders from Crafter’s Companion.

There’s so much more that I’m going to have to wait until I get home to share more of it with you. Let’s just say that we should have lots of new things coming in every week for the next few months 🙂

As we were leaving the show we happened to meet Tim Holtz. He had just finished a demonstration and was gracious enough to stop for a picture with me. Nice way to end the day.

As soon as we are back I will be putting up a preorder for the new Spellbinders dies. I would have liked to have shown you pictures of the projects they made with them but they don’t allow photographs at their booth but I can tell you that there are a lot of really terrific dies to choose from this release and the Imperial Gold dies give a really cool extra effect.

Well, that’s it for today. This is the last day of the show so we will just be finishing off our orders and getting ready to head home tomorrow.

Bye for now!
