Tuesday Tutorial: Thinking Outside Your Nesties – Part 1

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Hi everyone. This tutorial was put together by Shellie for us last year but I decided that it was time to feature it again because the technique is so much fun. It’s a great way to use your Nestabilities that has a real ‘wow!’ factor and it works with all kinds of shapes – circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, octagons and even the different labels. The key is to choose a stamp that is larger than the size of your Nestie so that it will go ‘hang’ over the edge.

Here is the original tutorial using regular stamps and Part 2 will show you how to use the same technique with our Studio K Digital Stamps.

Thinking Outside Your Nesties:

1. Select a stamp and then coordinate it with a Nestie is slightly smaller so that part of the image will be outside the Nestie shape. I chose  a floral image and inked it with Sage & Pink Petunia VersaMagic  dewdrop ink pads.

I used the direct to stamp technique to ink the different colors on my flower.

The shape of these dewdrop ink pads is perfect for inking small areas.

3. Choose a Nestie that fits the main part of your image allowing part of it to ‘hang out’ of the Nestie.

I used the  Large Standard Circles but you could use other shapes like ovals, octagons or one of the labels sets. Just lay the Nestie over your stamped image and try it out to see if you like it. Try different kinds until you find the one that you think will look the best.

4. Using your craft knife cut around the part of your image that will hang outside of the Nestie. Make sure you cut right against the image where your Nestie will sit.

5. Place your Nestie over your image making sure your cut area is on top of the Nestie.

6. Run your Nestie/image stack through your Big Shot or Cuttlebug.

7. Cut around the rest of the image that was outside your Nestie with scissors or your craft knife.

This is what is will look like when you are done.

To Finish The Card:

1. Emboss a piece of Core’dinations Cardstock using the Diamonds in the Rough CuttleBug Embossing Folder.

Once embossed gently sand the raised image using a sanding block.

2. Create a border for your stamped image using the coordinating size of Petite Scalloped Circle Nestabilities.

Layer the card elements, add a little ribbon and you are done!

Thanks for dropping by. Hope you give this fun technique a try.

Happy crafting!

Designer Showcase – Candy Cane Digi Stamp Set

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Hi everyone! Today I want to share with you some cards I made using one of our new Digital Stamp sets, Candy Canes with Border & Sentiment. Digi stamps are so much fun to play with! Once I got started I couldn’t stop at just one card so I made four totally different ones.

I love the versatility of digital stamps – you  can make them any size that you want so they fit perfectly on any of the Spellbinders Nestabilities dies. And that’s just what I did. All four of these cards are different sizes so the images and borders needed to be scaled to fit the Nesties I used but it was a snap! If you are new to Digis then check out our Digital Basics Tutorial to see how easy it is to size and print our digital images. I think you will be amazed at how easy it really is.

Before I show you all the cards I would like to give you a little tip that I found works really well to make sure that your images fit nicely onto your Nesties so they are easy to cut out. Measure the inside edge of your die, not to the ridge and that way your image will always fit and have a little border. I learned the hard way how tricky it can be to position the die when you can’t see the whole image – half the time I cut part of my image off. This way you can always see all the image. I just tape down the die with a little Scotch Removable tape to make sure it doesn’t move and voila! a perfectly cut image.

For my first card I printed the border so it would fit on the largest square (3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″) from the Small Classic Squares (S4-128) Nestabilities, adhered some Studio K 3mm Double-sided Adhesive along the edges and then added Forest Green glitter. Next I printed out the candy canes and colored them with Memento Markers and added a little Crystal Rainbow glitter with a Quickie Glue Pen. The front of the card was embossed with the Cuttlebug Polka Dots embossing folder. I love the bigger size of this folder and the bigger dots. Next I cut out the center band from a piece of cardstock that I had covered with Studio K Double-sided adhesive using the Spellbinders Big Scalloped Border Petites (S4-242) and then covered it with more Forest Green glitter. This is a really easy way to make coordinating glittered accents for your cards. The scalloped mat was cut from Red Mirrored cardstock using the largest die from the Small Classic Scalloped Squares (S4-129) Nestabilities. A little layering with foam dots, red rhinestones in the corners and it was done!

For this next card I used the same basic elements but sized and layered them differently. This card is 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ and I wanted to add a glittered border using the 3mm tape and Chartreuse Blend glitter so I needed to make the border and candy canes quite a bit smaller than I did for the last card. It was so easy with the digis. I printed the border first at 1 7/8″ and cut it out with my paper trimmer leaving a 1/8″ border all around. Then I matted it with Red Mirror cardstock, again adding a 1/8″ border. Next I measured how big the center area was (1 3/8″) and printed the candy canes 1 1/4″ so that I would have enough room to cut them to 1 3/8″ and add a glittered border like I did on the first card. Quick, easy & very sparkly!

Here’s another look for this set using less traditional colors. The frame was created with Spellbinders Labels One (S4-161) & Small Classic Circles (S4-116). Then I used the Petite Scalloped Circles (S4-117), Small Classic Circles (S4-116) and Large Classic Circles (S4-114) to create the layers for the candy canes in the center. The background was embossed with D’vine Swirl and I couldn’t resist adding some Crystal Rainbow glitter and a few pink rhinestones. Yummy! The colors make me think of peppermints.

This last card is only 3 3/4″ square and would make a perfect gift card, don’t you think? I used Labels Thirteen (S4-247) to cut out the Red Mirror cardstock and then embossed it with Tiny Bubbles. I love how the mirrored cardstock embosses. It adds a lot of punch to your cards. The rest of the elements were cut with the plain and scalloped circle Nesties and then I printed the candy canes 1 1/4″ so they were just the right size to go on top and colored them with Memento Markers. Nice and simple.

Thanks for dropping by. I will be featuring more digi stamps all month so be sure to check back to see what’s new.
