Tuesday with Tara {take 360} Let it SNOW

Happy Tuesday!

In my mind, I feel like I should avoid ‘snowy’ cards when I’m working on Christmas in July projects… but here I am, sharing a snowy card inspired by today’s SNS Challenge word: WHITE.

Perhaps you remember that I had a bit of an oops with a bottle of White Dina Wakley Media Gloss Spray several weeks ago (see the card & read about it here).  Since I had a puddle of white on my desk, I started grabbing papers & tags and assorted other things and dipped them in the puddle.  I suspected that since it has a glossy finish it would be fun for a resist technique, and I was right!  This card front was plain white Cardstock, which I dipped & dripped and splattered and left to dry.

I die cut the sentiment (Tim Holtz Festive Words) from Glitter Cardstock and added some color blending to the solid layer behind it.  I found a couple of Scribbly Snowflakes left over from last year’s holiday crafting and while I don’t recall what colors I used, I took inspiration from them for the palette on this card- keeping the background softer to let them stand out.

I went to my old faithful, Distress Inks to do some color blending over the card- a subtle mix of Stormy Sky, Salvaged Patina & Chipped Sapphire.  Once it was blended, I spritzed with some water and wiped off the card to really make those glossy bits pop!

I finished everything off with a few sequins and mounted it on a light blue card base.

Hope it gets you thinking about the Christmas creations you might start making this month… and the shopping you’ll do during our upcoming Christmas in July event, celebrating with 12 full days of inspiration and savings!

See you soon!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Let It Snow?

And just like that, it’s Friday again! Hope everyone is doing well, especially if you’ve been affected by the horrible weather events in BC.

I don’t know about you, but I’m just as happy when snow stays away for as long as possible. 😉  But that doesn’t mean I can’t put a little of the white stuff on a card for today’s Random Acts of Cardness challenge prompt, SNOW!

It’s a bonus when I can manage to make a cute card with just a little bit of sass! That penguin seems made for pitching snowballs, and I suppose it’s one way to get his little reindeer to pull the sled. The background is made with mermaid lagoon distress oxide ink blended on white cardstock, and then splattered with water. A few of my splats are larger than ideal, but oh well. 😀  The snow is made using a fun new product, snowfall distress grit-paste! It’s added to a separate piece of watercolour paper so it wouldn’t pick up any of the oxide colour. My critters, sled and snowballs are all from Lawn Fawn’s Toboggan Together, and the sentiment from Tiny Tag Sayings. The panel and sentiment dies are older My Favorite Things dies from my stash.

I hope my little snowy scene has inspired you to play along on the Scrap ‘n Stamp Random Acts of Cardness Facebook group! And stay tuned this weekend for the winner announcement for the Let It Snow Inspiration Hop!

Let It Snow, Please

Hello all, Kia here today for our Christmas in July Random Act of Cardness Challenge. Today is Day 16, which is me, and my challenge is Gelli Plate Printing. If you do not have a Gelli Plate, now is the time. You will enjoy all that can be done with Gelli printing.

For my backgrounds today I decided to use Distress Oxide Inks, some using only one colour and some with two colours. One stencil of snowflakes was also used, and Saran Wrap, so minimal supplies. My Gelli Plate is 5 x 7 inches.

For my card above, this is done using Saran Wrap. I tear a piece bigger than my plate and crunch it up in a tight ball, then unravel being careful not to tear it. I apply my colours of choice direct to the plate, in this case Worn Lipstick and Wilted Violet, and smooth them out with my brayer. I then place the unwrapped Saran over the plate and lightly tap over it to make sure the wrinkles will transfer.

No need to worry as your ink will not dry while the Saran is over it. I lift the Saran, then apply my paper, and smooth the paper with my hands before lifting my print. (I use Hammermill Printer Paper cut in half for this).  There is so much movement on the paper, it is fabulous.

I use my background I trim it up and attach to a piece of 80lb cardstock. I then trim that to the size I want for this particular card. In this case I trimmed to 4.75 square. I stamped the large snowflake from Colorado Craft using VersaFine Clair Ink in Paradise, and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. I then sponged on Picked Raspberry and Wilted Violet along two edges of the paper and added some Nuvo Shimmer Pen in Midas Touch to this area.

To finish I matted with a light lavender then a dark purple cardstock on a Neenah cardbase and stamped the sentiment using VersaFine Clair Ink in Fantasia. A few Nuvo Crystal Drops in Morning Dew completed this card.

The card above is also done with Saran wrap and one colour. I simply moved the Saran in areas to move the ink below before pulling the print. I finished with attaching it to cardstock and cut the piece in two so I have a piece for the inside of the card as well.

Using VersaFine Clair Ink in Pinecone I stamped the Bramble Berry Branch from Penny Black. I did about 4 passes to ensure I had good coverage. I then painted on Nuvo Baked Cherry using Nuvo Aqua Pen from the Festive Season Set, and went over that with my Nuvo Midas Touch Shimmering Pen. It looks fabulous, I so wish the sparkle would show in pictures.

And finally for my last card for today, again I am using the Colorado Craft Snowflake stamp. For this background I used two colours and a stencil.

To do this I attach the Hammermill paper to my work surface at the top of my gelli plate with green tape. This ensures the paper will stay in place. I then applied Squeezed Lemonade, smoothed out with my brayer and took a print with the paper I have attached.

I then added Worn Lipstick, smooth it with my brayer and laid my stencil over the top, rubbing my fingers around the stencil to make sure it was making contact, then lifted the stencil and folder the paper back over the plate, smoothing out with my hands.

This is one of my favourite prints as it is unexpected for a snowflake. Once again I trimmed the print, attached to cardstock, then cut to size. I stamped the snowflake and heat embossed with Rose Quartz embossing powder, then stamped the sentiment using Red Carnation Ink. To finish I added Orange Marmalade Jewel Drops.

Following are some of the prints I made all with Distress Oxide Inks.

I hope you have enjoyed today’s challenge and I hope you can play along. Following are Affiliate Links for all but the Distress Oxide Inks, that I used for these prints.

Thank you for joining us today.

Let It Snow

Hello all! Kia here with you today to share this card where I used Distress Oxide Inks and Penny Black stamps to make a cute scene.

For several days now I have wanted to use the Birches stamp to make a fun card for Winter, so for the fun I dug out the Winter Wonderland set.

I am using Neenah 110lb Solar Crest card stock for this card, with no layers.

To start, I stamped the Birches using VersaFine Clair ink in Nocturne. As the trees are close together I masked off the area that I did not want stamped.

Masking off the trees I then stamped the little mouse along with the hill portion of the stamp, again using the Nocturne ink.

In order to blend on the inks, I covered the mouse and trees with the Masking Fluid and added splatters of the fluid for snow us.

For this purpose I used an older paint brush that I first dipped in liquid dish detergent to ensure the masking does not damage the bristles. Once covered in the detergent rub the bristles between your hands to ensure you have them well covered. Once finished, wash the brush again with the liquid dish detergent and rinse well. The detergent does not harm the Masking Fluid.

It does not take the Masking Fluid long to dry, and once it did I began to add my layers of Distress Oxide ink, starting by masking the bottom of the card and brushing on with Salty Ocean ink. I then flipped the mask and brushed on the Squeezed Lemonade, adding it lighter to the hills.

Continuing with the blending I added the Carved Pumpkin, then the Candied Apple.

When I finished with the ink blending I removed the Masking Fluid, which can be done with a Rubber Pick up or your fingers.

I extended the hill on both sides using a Sharpie, then proceeded to colour the Mouse and Birch Trees with my Copics, and added Midas Touch Shimmering Pen to the scarf, the heart in the tree and some of the snow drops.

To finish I stamped the sentiment using VersaFine Clair ink in Paradise.

I hope you have enjoyed my card today. Following are Affiliate links to the products I used today, at no cost to you.

Scribbly Snowflakes card with Sizzix dies

This is card featuring Sizzix Scribbly snowflake dies and Tim Holtz Festive Words dies.  I figured it was appropriate as Canada gets yet another dump of snow – what perfect time to stay inside and create!  This is a throw back from our Christmas in July because Tara is dealing with her move – I hope you enjoy it!

Perhaps you remember  I had a bit of an oops with a bottle of White Dina Wakley Media Gloss Spray several weeks ago.  You can see the card & read about it here.

I die cut the Let if Snow from Tim Holtz Festive Words from Glitter Cardstock . Then added some colour blending to the solid layer behind it.  I found a couple of Scribbly Snowflakes left over from last year’s holiday crafting. Tuesday with Tara {take 334} Stencils & Snowmen

Happy Tuesday!

I did not set out to create a wintery card for today, but when it’s snowy outside it tends to make you reach for the snowy stuff inside!  When I sat down to play, I pulled out a variety of stencils and played around with backgrounds, some of which you will see on future projects because they just didn’t work with the Snowman Joy die that I decided I wanted to make something with again.

This time I cut my snowman from glittery Cardstock, which seems to suit him just fine!  I paired him with some tall glittery letters as well- the sweet Twiggy Hugs die by Memory Box.

The base layer is stenciled with MFT Candy Stripes, then a snowflake stencil (by Paper Rose) over the stripes.  I’ve seen some fun layered stencils lately and wanted to experiment… it kinda worked, but wasn’t quite a perfect pair!  It makes for an interesting layer on my card though!

I took the still inky snowflake stencil and applied clear texture paste through it onto the teal Cardstock layer as the base for my snowman.  It give a subtle, shiny but tinted snowy pattern that worked much better behind the die cuts!

I finished off my card with some stitched edges by MFT, a chit chat sticker by Tim Holtz and a bit of Studio Katia bling.

Inky (and snowy) hugs,

Tara

When It Snows

Hello to you, Kia here with you today for day 22 of the Random Act of Cardness series. Today’s prompt is Scenes, and that is what I have done using Penny Black stamps and distress inks.

First I am using Fabriano Hot Press watercolour paper for my card today. I have trimmed it to fit a 4.5×6 inch card base, matting with black card from Gina K Designs.

This card was not planned, it sort of fell together. I started with the birch trees and took it from there. Clearly, finding a stamp that would fit and balance the card would be nice. Alas, I came upon the Quietude stamp, which I think is perfect.

To start I stamped the Birch trees on a piece of copy paper, then stamped on the watercolour paper using VersaFine Clair ink in Nocturne.

I used the mask to cover the trees and stamped the Quietude stamp using Rustic Wilderness distress ink, with nothing on the reeds. I then added Walnut Stain spritzed with water to the reeds, then to ensure they were waterproof I went over them with a brown Sharpie fine liner pen.

As I went I let the colours dry before adding more layers of colour which helps keep the colours bright.

To finish up my scene I used Bleedproof white watercolour to paint the snow, adding in bits of Abandoned Coral, which I also added to the heart in the tree. I was also wearing a coral top, hence the coral below the picture too!

Using white Gouache mixed with water I added a lot of splatter for the snow, and while still wet I added splatters of Perfect Pearls.

The scene is matted with Gina K Design black onyx card which is glued to a Neenah card base.

Thanks so much for joining me today. Following are Affiliate links to the store for the products I used for this card, at no extra cost to you.

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

I hope everyone is doing well! It has been a beautiful weekend.   It was made better by all the snowfall we have recently gotten…almost 30cm!  The first thing that came to my mind when I saw all the snow was…..Do you wanna build a snowman?  So, that is exactly what we are going to do for today’s card!

I  want to make a car in which the snowman “came together” on the front like you were building it.  I didn’t think I had enough room on a standard A2 size card so I thought I would use a slimline style.  The base for this slimline card measure 7″ x 8 1/2″ and then is scored at 3 1/2″.  I made two bases and I will adhere them together with scor-tape to create a gatefold / trifold type of card.

To create a snowy background I ink blend the two flaps (gate folds) with some Distress Oxide Inks in Faded Jeans, Salty Ocean and I will bring in just a bit of Black Soot to deepen the Faded Jeans around the top.  I use two types of blending brushes.  The standard foam brushes and Picket Fence Blending Brushes.  I like how much ink the standard foam brushes lay down and I love the way the Picket Fence brushes blend the colours together so smoothly.

Once the ink blending is done I add some water droplets with a find mist sprayer and some sparkle with the Hero Arts White Iredescent Shimmer Spray.  This will give the look of snowfall in the background by the water pushing the pigment out.  You can create larger snowflakes by unscrewing the sprayer and tapping the water directly from the straw.

Make sure you let this dry or use a heat gun to speed up the process.  You want to make sure that the ink had dried and set before going on to the next step.

While I let the ink dry I die cut 3 circles in 3 different sizes to create the snowman’s body.  I also used my Silhouette machine and a cut file to create a hat, scarf and nose.  You can fussy cut your own accessories if you don’t have an electronic die cut machine.

Once my inked panels were dry I trim down each gate fold so that they measure 1 3/4″ and that they would close nicely against each other.  I then began to adhere the snowman parts to the card with some Gina K Connect liquid adhesive.  I encountered a bit of a snag in my plan and to find out what that is you will have to watch the video below.

http://youtu.be/QxAPyq7NUZw

The base and head of the snowman are adhered directly to the left panel of the card and the middle of the snowman is adhered down with foam squares to allow clearance for the snowman body to interlace into each other.

Now it’s time to decorate our snowman.  I adhere the hat and scarf with some more liquid adhesive and decided to use Nuvo Drops in Ebony Black for the eyes and buttons.

The card needed a bit of glitter so I used the Nuvo Glacier Paste in Winter White to create puffy snow on the bottom and the Nuvo Glitter Gloss to add some magic to the top hat.  The only thing left to do is to write a message on the inside.

I hope you enjoyed today’s Snowman card!  Remember to post the snowmen you build on the Scrap’N Stamp Facebook Page.

Glowing Snowflake

Hello, Kia here with you today for day 29 of the Random Act of Cardness challenges. My challenge is the technique known as Joseph’s Coat.

I remember this technique from years ago, which used glossy paper. But people don’t always have glossy paper on hand. So I went looking and found this version of Joseph’s Coat, which is what I used for my card.

I started with Hammermill 100lb cardstock in white. I then blended on the following Distress Inks, Mustard Seed, Picked Raspberry, Wilted Violet, Broken China and Festive Berries.

Before doing the next step it is important to be sure the background is dry. I added embossing powder to the background, then stamped using Colorado Stamp Company Winter Wishes Snowflake and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. I blew off some of the excess, but also let some stay on as it creates a cool look.

Once the embossing was done I let it cool, then applied Distress Oxide ink in Black Soot. I did not have it in just Distress Ink, but that is okay. I then took a dry baby wipe and buffed the card where the stamp was and also buffed a few of the other areas around the card, just until the colour below started to peek through.

I then heat the piece again to thoroughly dry the ink, then attached the piece to a pink card base.

I then stamped the sentiment on cardstock using VersaFine Clair ink in Glamorous, matted with black cardstock and attached using foam squares.

To finish up I added a few Nuvo Dew Drops.

I had a lot of fun making this card and I dare say I like this technique better than the one using glossy cardstock. I had all the products I needed, and for the other I would have had to buy more ink!

Thank you for visiting today. Following are Affiliate Links for the products that I have used for this card, at no extra cost to you.

Snow Simple!

Happy Sunday Crafters!

I feel like we just finally are getting into summer weather and here we are talking about Christmas again!?  Lol!  Today I am playing along with the Random Acts of Cardness Challenge and Christmas in July theme by showing  you a card that is “snow simple!”

I really want to show you how you can take a stamp set that you already have and make it feel like a Christmas/Winter card just by adding a bit of snow.

I will be using Lawn Fawn’s stamp set Fairy Friends however, another super cute set that you could use is the Frosty Fairy Friends.  I will be doing some ink blending and masking.

When I am creating a scene card I like to plan out on scrap paper where everything is going to go.  Basically, I stamp everything out and then plan my masking and in what order I need to stamp everything.  This saves me from making too many mistakes and ruining my good cardstock.

Once I have everything planned out I can go ahead and stamp the images that I want to appear in front first with Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  I will then stamp the images again onto a Gina K Masking Magic sheet.  I fussy cut out the images with my Cutter Bee Scissors and apply the masks overtop of the images.

I then ink blend with my foam ink blending tool in the colour Chipped Sapphire adding a nice dark solid layering of the ink to the background.  I then use my small Picket Fence Life Changing Blending Brush and blend Tsukineko Brilliance Moonlight White Ink around the light and fairy house to give the effect of light reflection.  I also take advantage of the circular shape of the foam blending tool and make a circular impression around the actual light in Squeezed Lemonade Distress Ink.  Adding this yellow colour gives another dimension to the glowing light feel.

I can then remove the masking paper with my Tim Holtz Craft Pick and colour the images with my Copic Markers.

To make this stamp set feel more “Wintery” or “Christmas” like I begin sketching out where I want the little piles of snow to be with a white gel pen and then I go over these areas with white acrylic paint with a  fine paint brush and also add a few dots here and there to look like falling snow.

Now, you can totally leave your card just like this.  However, I took it a step further (because this girl likes a bit of sparkle on her cards) and I pulled out my laminator and some glitter embossing powder as well as some little iridescent stars that I sometimes use in my shaker cards.     I could have also actually made this a shaker card…but, I was feeling lazy and I also wanted the look of the snow falling without having to shake the card.

I let my laminator heat up and then I sprinkled the glitter embossing powder and iridescent stars in-between the laminator sheet and ran it through.  Using white heat embossing will also work depending on white kind of look you want.  I suggest you do a few test pieces to see how your embossing powders react as well as play around with how much powder to use.

I die cut an oval in another card panel piece and adhered the snowy laminated piece to the back with Be Creative Score-Tape, trimmed off the excess laminating piece.

I then did a bit of stamp surgery using my Cutter Bee Scissors and altered one of the sentiment stamps so that I could just use the word “fairy”.  I then stamped “fairy” and “Christmas” on the lower right hand side of the oval card panel.  I then adhered this panel onto the stamped card piece using one layer of foam tape.  I think maybe two layers would have been better for more dimension.  The last thing to do was then to adhere all of this onto a side folding card, again I used the Be Creative Score-Tape for this.

I really wish that you could see this card in person as when you move it back and forth in the light the look of the snow between the laminated sheet is quite stunning against that ink blended background.

I hope this card has inspired you to look at the stamps sets you have and to see how simple it is to transform them into Winter/Christmas themed cards by adding a little snow.

Hoping you stay cool this week and I look forward to seeing what you create that is “snow” themed by posting your photos on the Scrap’N Stamp Facebook Challenge Page!

Take care!

~Chala
