Spatter Your Background

Today’s card is all about textures and backgrounds! I’m going to share with you how to spatter your background. It’s Deb here,  for the Scrap ‘N Stamp Design Team. The word for today’s daily challenge is ‘spatter’, or splatter – whichever term you prefer. If you’re not playing along with the daily challenges, you can find the details in the Scrap ‘N Stamp Facebook challenge page HERE.  At the end of each moth, one lucky winner is randomly chosen for a prize!

SPATTER YOUR BACKGROUND

In the crafting world, it’s never too early to start on Christmas projects! For this card, I use the Hero Arts Snowflake Cluster Die for the focal images.

Along with the spatter, you can see that I did something else ‘unusual’ for the background.

CARD DETAILS

Start with a piece of watercolour paper. On a large acrylic block, scribble watercolour markers in ‘stripes’, blending each colour slightly into the next. The Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers are perfect for this! I chose Violet, Light Violet, Prussian Blue and Blue. After scribbling the colours onto the block, light spray it with water, and the watercolour paper.  Now, turn the block over, and press the wet inks into the watercolour paper. Hold the block down firmly for a few seconds, to allow the paper to absorb the ink.  Remove the block from the paper. If you want to spread the colours more, lightly spray the paper again with the water.

While you wait for your watercolour paper to dry, you can die cut the snowflakes. Use you Big Shot or other die cutting machine with the Hero Arts Snowflake Cluster Die. Tonic Glitter Card in Sugar Crystal is very pretty & sparkly – perfect for snowflakes! On a strip of light blue cardstock, stamp the sentiment from the Concord & 9th Mistletoe Messages in Versamark ink. Cover the ink with white embossing powder, and set with a heat tool.

CREATE THE SPATTERS

Once the watercolour paper is dry, you’re ready to spatter your background! On your acrylic block, scribble the Violet and Blue markers, in separate areas. Spray the ink with water. Using a small brush, mix the Blue ink & water, and pick up some of the colour. To create the spatter, hold the brush over the top left of the watercolour paper (lighter area) and tap the brush against either your finger or another brush. Using a small brush will create small spatter marks. Repeat this with the Violet ink in the lower right corner.  Now, create larger spatters by picking up the ink & water mix with a larger bristle brush, and tap more ink onto the background.

For the white spatter, mix a bit of white paint – I  happen to have white gouache, or you can use any acrylic – with water, and repeat as above with the marker ink.  The photo below is a close up, so you can see the spatters a bit better.

I like have the mix of large & small spatters; it adds more interest, I think.

PULL IT ALL TOGETHER

Now you’re ready to assemble your card! On a light blue card base, attach a strip of light purple cardstock on the left side, with liquid glue or tape. Next, attach your background to that, with foam tape or squares. Use liquid glue to attach the snowflakes on the diagonal, across the card front. Finally, attach the sentiment with foam tape or small squares.
