Tuesday with Tara {take 317} TWO

Happy Tuesday!  Today’s card celebrates the BIG event in our lives last weekend… our grandson turned TWO years old!   I was faced with the challenge of making a card for him that was both creative and simple.  I hope you like what I came up with!

I combined two fun stamp sets for this card- a cupcake by Gina K Designs and a dog by Anita Jeram.  I knew I could add two candles to the cupcake but I wanted something simple with no coloring and I wanted a big number 2 on my card front!  I went with a simple blue & green color scheme- doing my stamping with Prize Ribbon Distress Ink and my ink blending with Twisted Citron.  My blending brush was a bit dirty (oops) so that’s why you see some color variation in the green part of my card!

I started by stamping the cupcake and dog on a panel of Cardstock that I cut 1/4″ smaller than my card front, spacing them so there was room on both sides and beneath the images.  I used another piece of scrap Cardstock the same size and sketched a large 2 on it, then cut it out (trimming and adjusting it here and there until I was happy with it).  I then placed it over the stamped images and used a bit of washi tape and some scraps of paper to roughly mask over the parts of the dog & cupcake that overlapped.  I should have done a proper mask, using a post-it note, or even better a product like Masking Magic… but I improvised with what was on the table next to me 🙂

From there, I just gradually added color over the entire background with my blending brush.  Once I was done, I lifted my masks to reveal my design!  In order to add a bit more texture, I splattered some water across the design.  I did forget that I had used water-based ink for my stamping as well… so as you can see, I got some splotches there too.  I decided to embrace it and add some blue splatters too for a bit of a confetti vibe!  A tiny bit of glitter on the candles was my finishing touch after adhering the panel to a blue card base.

I stamped a smaller pup from the set on the envelope to finish things off.  It turned out to be a pretty fun design, if I don’t say so myself!  The only thing I’d change is next time I would probably use a permanent ink for my stamping so it wouldn’t bleed with my spritzing 🙂

Wishing you a day full of inky fun!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 315} Happy For You

Happy Tuesday!  Today’s Challenge word is SPRITZ so I took it upon myself to use Distress Spray Stains as my ink medium today!  I also took inspiration from the teasers for the new Distress Crayon Release and limited my palette to the three newest Distress Colors- Prize Ribbon, Salvaged Patina & Kitsch Flamingo.  They’re really pretty together, and while I love the combo they are not in my ‘comfort zone’ together, so I really struggled to get a finished card together (I made a bunch of backgrounds though, so you’ll see them pop up here & there!)

For this background, I used the Distress Mixed Media Heavystock and using the stains it was a favorite of mine for the way the inks were able to mix & blend together in some spots and still show spray/splatter marks on other spots.    I stamped first the Tim Holtz Floral Outline Stamps over the Cardstock, then after it was dry I spritzed the three colors over it.  I did not add water to my background, but I did go back over it with some pink (kitsch flamingo) as it was the lightest color and the other colors were definitely dominant.

I really wanted to keep this card simple, and I chose a pretty sentiment from Gina K Designs to go with it.  I struggled a lot with what to add and finally die cut a few different leaves and layered them on the card. I added a few touches of bling and a twine bow for some texture.

I really struggle with designing cards in certain colors and this was an example of that for me!  I do love the colors together with these stamps though, and you’ll see them again soon!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Hot and Cold Embossing

Hi Everyone!

It’s Susan here with day 28 of the Random Acts of Cardness challenges and todays challenge is to use embossing on your projects. I chose to use an embossing folder (cold) and to heat emboss the sentiment (hot).

I started with the Taylored Expressions Peaceful Poinsettia Embossing Folder and a piece of watercolor card stock cut to 4 x 5 1/4″. I grabbed No.024 Wine Red and N0.052 Bright Yellow and scribbled them onto an acetate sheet.

Next I spritzed it with some water.

Then pressed the watercolor card stock into the puddles of ink until it was all covered.

After I covered the whole panel I dried it with my heat gun. I used the peaceful Poinsettia Embossing Folder to emboss the inked panel then set about coloring it in. I used the same two colors I used for the panel and added No.021 Light Carmine and No.043 Olive Green to color in a few of the flowers and leaves. I did this by adding ink directly to the bottom part of the petal that I wanted to color then using a water brush I blended the color to the full petal. Some petals have two colors and some have the same color twice. Letting it dry after the first layer then adding more of the same shade in a smaller area is a great way to stretch your colors into more shades of the same color. I hope that makes sense.

Once I finished coloring the panel I layered it onto a piece of the dark olive card stock from the Hero Arts Sampler Pack than adhered that to a white card base. I used a clear sparkle pen to add some sparkle to the petals of the flowers.

I used a sentiment from Taylored Expressions Beautiful Baubles Add-ons Stamp Set. I embossed it with white embossing powder onto black card stock then fussy cut it out. I added some craft foam to the back and adhered that to the card.

Happy Stampin’
and thanks so much for visiting!
Stay safe everyone!!
Susan
