Tuesday with Tara {take 141}

Happy Tuesday!  Today’s post is celebrating what happens when you take an artist/teacher’s advice to ‘make a hot mess’ (thanks Dina Wakley!)… it happens when I feel like my mojo has left and I just start pulling out paint and random materials and see if I can make something cohesive… something that feels complete at the end of the day.  Sometimes it’s still just a hot mess. And sometimes it’s unlike anything you every intended to make… but at least you made something 🙂  Art is a big learning process.  One thing I’ve learned from the ‘big names’ in this industry that you don’t get anywhere if you don’t take risks.  You don’t discover new things if you don’t let yourself ask ‘what if’ and you don’t grow and improve if you don’t practice and make a few ugly things along the way.

It’s an easy thing about working with paper, ink & paint and stamps & die cuts… you can always paint over and try again.  Or you can add another layer or just set it aside and see if perhaps you’ll learn to like what you made!

I was not loving my background.  It was inspired by a kraft page I did in my art journal, but It felt a bit boring and didn’t feel complete… so in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day last week, I added some gold… and then these ladies helped me turn it into a Thank you card 🙂

There’s not a lot of technique to share here today, just wanted to encourage you to MAKE something!  Play with the supplies you left on your work surface… add paint or ink or water, and have some fun 🙂

Happy Tuesday!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 129}

Wishing you an OTTERLY Merry Christmas!  I fell in love with this cute mini set by Lawn Fawn and snatched it up… I had fun creating a set of these cute & simple cards featuring this little guy and matching sentiment.  I kept things really simple, letting some rose gold metallic tags and washi tape add a fun metallic touch to my cards.  It was hard to capture the shine in a picture, but it’s really pretty!

As you can see, I added some glitter glue to his little scarf as well… aw 🙂

My little otters were stamped on watercolor card stock and colored simply with watercolor pencils.  All the blue on this card is Broken China Distress Oxide Ink- I stamped the sentiment with it, rubbed it on my craft sheet, misted and smooshed for the splashy background, and used a watercolor brush to paint his scarf.  Luckily I had this ribbon that was also a perfect match and doesn’t overpower the pretty washi tape!  I finished off the background with some little hearts (part of the stamp set) and bits of Nuvo Glitter Dots.

These were fun to make, and I’ll be duplicating this design if I need some more cards at the last minute (which is pretty much where we are with less than a week before Christmas is here!).

Inky hugs,

Tara

Bright Lights Blog Hop

Welcome to our Bright Lights Blog Hop!  Today the team is excited to be sharing with you some projects featuring the string of lights die by Lawn Fawn!  Be sure to leave comments at each stop along the way… there are chances to WIN prizes, this time they’ll be from the next Lawn Fawn release on Dec. 14!  You’ve got until Friday, Dec. 15 to comment, winners will be announced next Saturday 🙂

This die set is a lot of fun and comes with a bunch of pieces, including two layers each for three different sizes of light bulbs!  I decided to use all of them on my card and cut them from a pearly white card stock.  The set also includes two different styles of toppers for the bulbs, I saved myself a step die cutting by trimming the ‘hanger’ part off of half of them.

I love the curly ‘string’ that’s part of this die set and did an inset die cut, cutting it from both of my background papers and piecing it between the two for a smooth background.  Adhering Be Creative Tape on the back of my papers before die cutting helped make it seamless!  I used the ‘merry’ word from the new Tim Holtz ‘Merry Christmas’ die, and cut ‘& bright’ out from Tim Holtz’s 1″ Alphanumeric Die Set.

My white snowflake background is the same as you saw here.  It’s hard to capture the shimmer, but here’s a couple more shots, in natural light and with a flash 🙂

I added the blue glitter string to the inside and a sentiment stamped in the corner to finish my card… hope you like it!

I think you’ll really be inspired by the different things everyone has created today!  Have fun along the hop 🙂  If you get lost along the way just check back here to find your next stop!

Have FUN on our Bright Lights Blog Hop!  And have fun shopping too…

Inky hugs,

Tara
