Tuesday with Tara {take 120}

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you’ve had a great week and that you enjoyed our Freaky Friday Blog Hop (if you missed it, it’s not to late to check it out and comment for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to the online store!  We’ll announce the winners on Friday!).

While the hop was happening, I was making a hot mess in an all day Art Journaling class with Dina Wakley!  We had such a fun time, and I tried some new things and stepped out of my comfort zone… it was fabulous!  Today I want to share with you the ‘big’ project we did in her new Mixed Media journal– a six ‘page’ spread with one continuous theme.  Wow!  Since this was a class, I’m not going to be giving you any step-by-step details, though I will encourage you to take a class with Dina if you ever get a chance, she’s a really great teacher!  If she doesn’t teach in an area near you, she’s got classes available online and some great youtube videos to check out as well!

As I said, we worked in the new journal and our spread started with a page of watercolor paper, then burlap (2 sides) then a large tag (2 sides-inserted with her Printed Paper Tape) and finally another page of watercolor paper.  I used images from the ‘Words in Faces‘ stamp set as my focal point.  My color scheme was primarily Lapis, Fuchsia and Cheddar paints from her collection.  I also used a variety of other stamps & stencils from her collection… lots of fun stuff to work with!

Space doesn’t allow for me to share a ton of close up photos… but I hope you can get a taste of the creative fun I had!  So many things about this stretched me out of my comfort zone, and I loved it!  Hopefully it inspires you to move out of yours this week… and make a hot mess 🙂

Inky hugs,

Tara

I’ve been enjoying getting creative with the Paper Dolls by Tim Holtz, and these new additions add a creepy touch to the mix… there are a few seasonal images included, with costumes and pumpkins, as well as some regular type portraits with creepy expressions!  It’s a nice mix if you want a variety of paper dolls to work with!  I chose to use some of the ‘regular’  images and make a creepy/romantic tag, pairing a couple of single dolls together.
My plan was to create a set of tags that could be attached to treat bags for Halloween- if it happens, this one will go on the one I give my husband 🙂
I started with black #8 tags and Distress Oxide Ink, stamping a background pattern (new Myers by Dyan Reavely) directly on the tag, then applying the same ink through a stencil (birds by Dina Wakley) over it to create my background design (I am not a big Halloween crafter, so chose some ‘neutral’ designs that I thought would work with the overall feel I was going for.  It’s good to have basics in your stash!).  I selected my paper dolls and chose to add a few spots of color to them with Distress Markers.  I didn’t have a perfect match, but wanted a monochromatic look for this tag so went with a similar shade of purple.  The inky puddled a little bit in some places, so I dabbed with a cloth until I got the desired look.
I wrapped some sheer black ribbon with twine to add texture and finished it off with a metal embellishment (this fancy lock is by Prima) and some occasions chit chat stickers.
I created a couple more tags as well, which you can see all together here.   Here’s a shot of the backgrounds I started with…
 … and the set of finished tags:
I hope you enjoyed my simple tag- I can promise you, you’re gonna be blown away by some of the spooky creations coming up in the hop.  Some of the ladies have a ton of fun Halloween themed products and they know how to rock it 🙂  Enjoy, and let us know what you think of the hop!  Remember there’s a chance to win a $25 gc on each blog!  When you’re all done, be sure to stop by the store and pick up some of the products that inspire you!  There’s some great deals today, including many items $13 off!

Tuesday with Tara {take 118}

Happy Tuesday!

I had a few bits & pieces laying around from my last card and decided to do a little bit of creative play in my Dina Wakley Mixed Media Journal!  This was my first time creating on one of her canvas pages and I had a bit of fun with it!

I started with a large butterfly die cut from the Botanicals set and the stamped sentiment I had on a scrap of paper.  After deciding where I wanted to place them, I used the back side of the butterfly as a mask, which I brushed paint around.  I had a mix of elephant & umber on my palette and picked up a mixture of them randomly as I went across the page.  After that, I chose a couple lines of text from the affirmations stencil that fit with my ‘be courageous’ sentiment by Concord & 9th and brushed them on with umber paint to make it pop.  I wanted a bit of color in with all the browns, so chose to highlight the green & blue in the butterfly wings, adding some washi tape in three spots to direct the eye towards my focal point.  I used matte gel medium to adhere some torn book paper, then stenciled a leaf in the open space above where my butterfly would rest.  Again, I used a mixture of colors, this time it was lime & turquoise.  I brushed a small amount of the paint that was left on my brush over the washi tape.

Paint dried quite quickly on the canvas, so I didn’t have to wait long before adhering my scrap with the ‘be courageous’ sentiment.  I used gel medium again.  The butterfly was the final thing I did on the page, I placed it down before attaching it and used the fine tip applicator on my Penny metallic paint to scribble some circles in a few spots across the page.

It was fun working on a new medium in my art journal!  I still have more exploring to do in this journal,  haven’t even attempted any art on the burlap page yet… but I’ll be sure to share it with you guys when I do!  I’m very blessed to be taking a class with Dina Wakley herself in less than two weeks, so I’m sure I’ll have plenty of fresh inspiration after that! If you’ve got one of Dina’s journals and have been creating in it, I’d love to see what you came up with!  Feel free to comment on this post with a link to inspire us 🙂

Painty hugs,

Tara
