Colour Burst -Fabulous Feather

Hello Crafty Friends. Happy Sunday. Nancy F here, and man it seems like it has been forever since I have been on the blog. Lots of craziness, which has left little crafty mojo. But I am back and I am continuing with the monthly theme of all things watercolour.

I have two new cards featuring alot of the same products I used for the blog hop, but twisting it up in a fun way to use your stencils and die cut machine. Then adding a new die or two and some opal polish from my stash to snazzy it all up. I hope you enjoy and find some inspiration.

As I mentioned in my blog post for the hop, I created so many backgrounds, using the beautiful colour bursts that I really wanted to find a way to use them up. In the above picture, you can see part of the process.
I started off with watercolour paper, placed the stencil down and added the colour burst powders right on top and sprayed with water using my distress mister. I decided to add another card on top as to not waste any of the ink and see what kind of image I would get.  I loved how it turned out so much I made a few more versions of it.

Since I had so many backgrounds I decided to play around with a technique I had never tried before, using your stencils to emboss. Yup you heard me right. Many probably knew this and have tried it but I have not, and wasn’t really sure how it would work out. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. To get started I pulled out my long platform (this is what came with my big shot) the tan embossing mats, my metal shim, the plastic plates and of course a good old stencil. For this I used the peacock feather from Hero Arts.

I set up my platform on tab two then added the plastic plate, the tan embossing matt, the inked background, then the stencil and metal shim along with the second plastic plate, (I did another version of this technique using a die-cut and I can not remember which I had to use a paper shim with. If you try this you may need to do that) and ran it through. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this turned out.

Along with numerous backgrounds from my previous play session, I also had numerous sentiments that I had gone and stamped out from the Picket fence studio “Shake our Tailfeather” set. I heat embossed these with gold and white embossing powder. I guess I’ve gotten in the habit of making bulk cards and always needing to make sure I have extra of things, just in case it goes sideways. I die cut the gold using the wonky stitched dies from My Favorite Things. while I was at my machine I die cut several feathers from black and white heavy cardstock, and some fancy foil friendly paper I had in my stash.

Once I was finished all the die cutting and embossing it was time to add some shine and interest to the cards. I used some shimmer opals from my stash to lightly brush up on the embossing. I loved how this turned out, it really made the colours and the feather details stand out more. Once the opals were dry I went over it with some black soot. Thanks to a dear friend of mine I am completely stuck on the black soot. It’s like Franks Red Hot sauces, “I put that shh” on everything, lol

As for those beautiful feathers, I didn’t do too much. One of them was special foil friendly paper, so I decided to give it a try and ran it through my laminator with purple foil. I can’t say I am all that impressed with this but it does add a little flare. I decided the feathers needed an extra little something so I took the opals and went around them slightly just to bring out some of the detail.

It was time to finally assemble the cards. Both were varying sizes because 1, I started with different size panels when I did the inking and 2, I couldn’t bear to cut any of the panels down and waste any of these beauties. So the largest is this feather card measuring at 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 and the smaller is a standard A2 5 1/2 x 4 1/4. I kept it simple just layering the two onto black panels and white bases. I was very happy with how they turned out.

Lastly, I decided to pop the inked panels up on to the black card stock for some dimension, I also popped up some of the feathers and sentiment just for a little something extra.

I hope you found some inspiration and try using your stencils for embossing. It was a lot of fun and something I will deffenitly do once more.

Have a lovely week ahead and I hope you have time to get your craft on.

Nancy.

Scrap ‘n Stamp March 2012 Sketch Challenge

April 13, 2012

Hello everyone!

I’m sorry that I haven’t gotten around to posting the card pics for March and selecting a winner for the Sketch Challenge  but I have been dealing with a lot of personal stuff for the last few weeks and I just couldn’t keep up with all the things that I had to do. I don’t usually post personal stuff on the blog but I didn’t want everyone to think I had just forgotten or couldn’t be bothered. There really were a lot of things happening and I’m sure you will all understand when I tell you that in the last week my husband broke his foot, our basement flooded and I injured my right eye and am going in for surgery on it today. All that on top of recovering from a broken left arm (that happened in late January) which has prevented me from working at my usual pace. It’s been quite a challenge but I’m sure we are through the worst of it and I’m looking forward to getting everything back to normal.
I will do my best to post the winner on the blog early next week and apologize for leaving you all wondering what was happening. We will suspending the monthly Sketch Challenges for awhile but I want to thank all of you that have participated. There are lots of great sketch challenges on the internet and I hope you will continue to challenge yourselves and have fun creating and playing.
Kate

Hi everyone! It’s that time again for another fun sketch challenge. I hope you are enjoying them and we love seeing the cards that you create.

Before I show you this month’s sketch I want to announce the winner of the February Sketch Challenge prize….and the winner is LAUREN BREKELMANS.

Congratulations Lauren! Your $10 Scrap ‘n Stamp Gift Certificate will be emailed to you shortly. A big thanks again to everyone that participated.

This month we are going to give you another little bonus prize in addition to our usual $10 Scrap ‘n Stamp Gift Certificate. If you purchase a digi stamp from March 8th – 31st and use it on your card then we will send you a coupon for a FREE digi (of the same value) that you can use during the month of April. It’s like buying one and getting one FREE. You don’t have to use a digi stamp but if you do you will get a FREEBIE! Gotta love those FREEBIES.

So what does this month’s sketch look like? Well, here it is…

Kim made this super cute card with one of the digis from our January release called Milo Hanging Out 4005C. I love how she cut out the towels hanging on the line a second time and popped them up with foam dots.

The Sizzix  Framelits set – Tickets 657569 was used for some of the layers and then the image and mat were cut out with the Spellbinders Deckled Rectangles S4-202. This is the perfect card when you want to send someone a little encouragement.

Now it’s your turn. We can’t wait to see what you create with this sketch.

Scrap ‘ n Stamp February 2012 Sketch Challenge

Hi everyone! Kate here with another Sketch Challenge for you. Sorry the challenge post and selection of last month’s winner is late but I broke my arm last week and I’m just getting back to work and doing a little bit more each day. Typing with one hand definitely takes me a little longer and thank goodness for spell check. LOL!

First I would like to thank everyone that participated in the January Sketch Challenge. It was great to see all of your cards! I had my hubby Ken do a random draw from all the entries (you got one for each card you entered and one for each product that you used that you bought from Scrap ‘n Stamp) and the winner of the January 2012 Sketch Challenge draw is…..Joanne Meyles.

Congratulations Joanne! Your $10.00 Scrap ‘n Stamp Gift Certificate will be emailed to you today.

And now I have a brand new sketch to inspire you and a couple of cards to share so let’s get started.

Here is the February sketch…

And here is Kim’s take on the sketch…

Kim told me that she had always wanted to try a card with suspended elements and this sketch inspired her to try it. The red hearts were die cut with Sizzix Framelits Hearts 657561 and then Kim embossed them with three different embossing folders. The silver heart shapes, sentiment & swirls are Peel Off Stickers – Swirly Hearts (sorry, these are out of stock when this post is going up but they should be arriving any day). What a great Valentine’s Day card!

Here’s my take on the sketch…

I turned the sketch sideways to make my card and used Letraset ProMarkers in Tulip Yellow, Sunflower & Moss to color in the flowers that I printed using our FREE digital stamp Blossom #1 (sk3377). The flowers were sized to fit on a 1 1/4″ square and then I die cut green scalloped squares with Spellbinders S4-129 Classic Scalloped Squares – Small. A little ribbon and a few Studio K Droplets were my only embellishments but you could certainly add more if you wanted to fancy it up. Sometimes I like to keep my cards simple and then when I go to use them I add extras and personalize them.

Well, it’s your turn now. I can’t wait to see what can you create with this sketch.

Here are your cards…

Linda sent this card that she made with patterned paper from the Basic Grey Porcelain collection, quilling done in two tones of pink, white cardstock that was embossed with the Budding Vine embossing folder and Happy Birthday Peel Off stickers. To keep the card closed Linda used the Tombow Hook & Loop fasteners which she said are a very cool product that she would highly recommend.

Regena sent us this card.

Donna made this card with paper from the Basic Grey Porcelain collection and Happy Birthday Peel Off stickers, a border strip of Peel Offs, and Butterfly Peel Offs that she colored with markers.

Lauren sent us this card that she made with the new Basic Grey Kissing Booth paper pad. Each of the hearts and frames are popped up and Lauren added a little bling on each one.

This cute little baby card was sent in by Julie.
