What the Flock?

Hey Crafters!

Anybody else feel like.. What the Flock is going on in the world today?  Well…I am going to embrace the isolation and get to know some crafting materials I haven’t played with before.  Thankfully Scrap’N Stamp is still able to deliver and I ordered some Deco Foil Flock Transfer Sheets.  There are so many fabulous colours to choose from…and of course I ordered as many as I could!

As soon as I saw these I had several ideas come to mind.  The first was to incorporate our current stencil theme and I created a super chic birthday card with the Fleur de Lis stencil from My Favourite Things.  I think this will work really well with any flourish or geometric stencils.

You will also need the Deco Foil Transfer Gel or the Duo Gel  and a laminator (or iron).  With the help of my Wendi Vechhi Make Art Stay-tion and a craft pallet knife I spread a thin layer of the Deco Foil transfer gel evenly over top of the stencil.  I removed the stencil and set the wet stencil piece aside to dry for about an hour. The transfer gel starts off as white and will dry clear.  Remember to wash your stencil with warm soapy water right away.

While the gel is drying I went ahead and prepared the rest of my embellishment pieces by die cutting some elements from mirrored and white cardstock  I also took the time to preheat my laminator for a good 20 minutes.  Once the transfer gel has dried clear, place the Deco Foil Flock sheet fuzzy size down on to the dried transfer gel.  I use parchment paper as my carrier sheet and I ran it through my laminator twice to ensure good adhesion. Then, gently peel back the liner paper off the flocking.

I am so pleased with the outcome of the black flocking on the hot pink cardstock.  It reminds me of the old textured wallpaper that people used to have, so gaudy looking but so awesome at the same time!  I used my Elizabeth Craft rectangle dies to add more interest and a decorative edge.

I found some jewelled ribbon in my ribbon drawer that adds just the right amount of bling to the background and then use Gina K Connect glue to adhere it to the panel, making sure I wrap the ends around to the back.  I secure the panel down onto some Lawn Fawn Black Liquorice cardstock and adhere it to an A2 side folding card base with foam adhesive.

I layer the mirrored and white cardstock element pieces on top of the jewelled ribbon securing the pieces with Be Creative Scor-tape.  During one of my trips to my local dollar store I scored big and found some gorgeous 3D butterfly stickers that worked perfectly for the main element of this card.

I then chose a simple Happy Birthday sentiment in a script font stamping with VersaMark ink onto some more black liquorice cardstock and heat embossed with white embossing powder.

I think this card is so elegant looking and I have someone very special in mind to give this to!

For my next card I wanted to show you that you can use the Deco Foil Gel and flock sheets without stencils as well!  I stamped a background with the ice cream from Lawn Fawn’s Sweetest Flavor and in Hickory Smoke Distress Ink.  I want one of the ice creams to stand out so  I use a paint brush and paint the ice cream mound with the Decal Foil gel.   Again you will know it is ready to flock once the gel dries clear.  This time it was a bit trickier to tell when it was dry as it was on top of white card stock.  I followed the same procedure as my first card, layering the flock fuzzy side down, wrapped in parchment paper and I ran it through the laminator twice.  I must not have put enough of the gel on as it was a bit spotty in areas.  That’s okay though, I used my copic markers to gently darken in the area with a similar colour.  I did very simple colouring and shading and did another black sentiment strip with white embossing.  I layered this panel onto light pink cardstock and used my white gel pen to add a boded of white stitch lines.  To give the ice cream an extra special look I added a tear drop crystal from Studio Katia adhering it with Glossy Accents.  The glossy accents, jewel and flocking made a realistic textured look to the ice cream.

As soon as I saw that Sunshine Yellow flocking I knew exactly what card I wanted to make! I also wanted to try using my Silhouette machine with the flocking. The one thing you want to remember is that you will need to cut the flocking with the white backing piece up.  Otherwise, the blade just scrapes off the flocking.  See the photo below.

I taped down the flocking onto a piece of cardstock with some purple thermoweb tape and then stuck that onto the adhesive carrier sheet.  You do not want to place it down directly onto the adhesive carrier sheet as all your flocking will stick to the sheet!  I cut a simple bunny silhouette shape to create this fun “Peep” card!  I used a copic marker to add the little face, I used several Lawn Fawn products including the sentiment from the Easter Party stamp set, die cut banner from the Double Slider Surprise die set and the Really Rainbow cardstock worked so well as my background.  I love how this one turned out!  So cute!

I can’t wait to use this flocking on other card creations and I hope that these cards inspire you to add some flocking to your cards.

Stay safe and crafty!

Alcohol Ink and Acetate Backgrounds

Hi Again, Chala here for today’s blog!

I was looking around my craft area and realized I have a lot of craft supplies that I have not even used yet!  Something new will come out and I just HAVE to have it….but, sometimes the chaos of my life takes over and these supplies will sit for weeks, months and sadly even years before I get a chance to play with them.  That is how I feel about my alcohol inks.  I have used them a bit, but not nearly enough!  So, I decided to pull them out along with some acetate and a few stamps and dies that I have purchased but have not yet used.  Some of the dies have been sitting so long I don’t even know how, when or where I got them from!  But I am glad I am using them now!

To start, I gather all of my alcohol inks.  The colours I currently have are Patina, Pool, Aquamarine, Amethyst, Coral and Flamingo.  (However, I have also seen the new Pearl Alcohol Inks and I think I might need to purchase some of those!!)  I also grab my Blending Solution and my Starbucks reusable straw to help mix the colours.

I have some acetate cut down to standard A2 size (5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″).  I start to drop colours onto the acetate.

I then add some of the blending solution to help move the colours around. I will pick up the paper and move it back and forth to get things flowing.   I also grab the straw and blow air to help move the ink in particular areas  (To see how each background was created I suggest you watch the YouTube video). I add more of the alcohol inks and blending solution as I go along until I get the look I like. This is not something you can necessarily “teach”.  I recommend you just play around until you get something that you like.  Each person will have their own preference of when to stop or keep going.  If you absolutely hate the result you can do one of two things.

1.  Set it aside!  Chances are once it dries you will like it.

2. You can use some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel and wipe it all off and start over!

I suggest you try to set it aside first.  That is what I did with some of mine.  I will even show you in my YouTube video what I did with the ones that did not work out or I did not particularily like as a background.

I will make a few backgrounds using different colour combinations and blowing techniques with the straw.  I will also add silver and gold deco foil to a couple of them before they dry completely to add a little shimmer and shine!  Here is a close up of one of those backgrounds.

The picture just does not do it justice!  They turned out super cool!

From here there are SO many things you can do!  I begin trying out the Alcohol Lift Ink.  I tried using some detailed stamps and some with larger surface stamp areas.  I like to use the Tonic Stamp platform because you can turn the lid around to use with clear or cling rubber stamps.  I apply the Alcohol Lift Ink liberally onto the stamp, close the lid down onto the inked acetate and apply even pressure.  I then open the lid, slide out the acetate and re-stamp onto white cardstock.

Then I bring back the acetate and with a paper towel I dab up the excess alcohol ink and then buff the surface with a clean area of the towel.  The detailed stamp didn’t give me the results I had hoped for on the acetate… but the stamp with larger surface area turned out well.  Here is how that one looks.

I encourage you to take a look at the stamps you have and play around!  I even tried using a stencil and  lifting the ink with a foam ink blender and the Alcohol Blending solution.

The possibilities are absolutely endless!

I was also able to put some of my unused die cuts to good use!  I created some trifold cards (a Jennifer McGuire technique) as well  as some window cards to give a stained glass feel!  Here is how those cards turned out.

This first one is with silver deco foil and a trifold card.  I used one of my “not so good” backgrounds to stamp a sentiment on the inside using the Alcohol Lift Ink.

This second card I used the stencil background and a top folding A2 size card.  I sandwich the acetate between two pieces of cardstock so that when you lift the card it has a stained glass look/feel.  I left enough room at the bottom to adhere a die cut sentiment and this will also allow me a space to write on in the inside of the card and not be seen through the window.

The last one I am using is another background with deco foil, this time in gold.  These colours reminded me of Easter….and I had a die cut that reminded me of a Ukrainian Easter Egg design.  So, I pulled out an oval die set I had, some gold foil cardstock and made a card that used the window card and trifold card ideas together.  Again, I sandwich the acetate and the gold cardstock between the card base and the card panel.  I heat embossed a sentiment with gold embossing powder on a banner and popped it up with foam tape.  Here is how the last card turned out.

I kept these cards simple, but if you like you can add embellishments such as sequins and pearls.

I will save the other backgrounds and stamping that I did to create cards at another time.

I encourage you to watch the video below as it gives greater detail on this technique and the assembly of the cards.

Coffee with Friends

Hello and Happy Wednesday.

I am on the Scrap’n Stamp Blog today sharing a new card created with one of the distressed oxide panels I created and shared in a recent blog post, using the color combinations Kristina Wernerswas show casing.

I was had a few idea’s float around in my head as we have an upcoming blog hop for the “Some Like it hot” challenge and I knew I could only share one of my creations so I thought I would keep with the theme and create this lovely card. Its my take on a platonic valentine’s card. If you haven’t already come play along with us on our Scrap’n Stamp Challenge page

I have to apologize in advance for rambling or disjointedness to this post, I am running on four hours sleep all week on top of being sick, my brain isn’t working at its best… lol

Since I was going to play along with the challenge I had to rummage through my stash and find my coffee supplies.  I pulled out my “My Favorite Things” coffee cut die, the coffee break stamp set, as well as the Love you a latte set from Lawn Fawn. I also pulled out an 3d embossing folder from Crafters companion, as well as a couple extra dies, all of which are linked below.

I actually didn’t have to do too much new die cutting as I had a lot of the stuff already pre-cut from other projects. The coffee cut was die cut out of heavy weight white card stock, and the sleeve out of Kraft ( I believe recollections 65lb )  I decided I wanted to add a little extra interest to the coffee cup, so I ran it through my Gemini jr using a crafters companion 3d folder ( this had come with the Gemini jr)  I then layered the embossed cup  on two more cups as I didn’t want to use too much foam tape.

I also had the sentiment pre die cut from the Concord and 9th sentiment dies.  I had cut it out from Deco Foil transfer sheet, which I had run through my laminator with gold foil, the transfer sheet was very thin so I decided to cut out the sentiment a few more times using heavy weight black cardstock and stick it adhesive.

From there I decided to die cut some vellum using the Avery Elle Scallop oval and rectangle die, to layer under the coffee cups and under the main panel, just to add a little extra something and have a spot to ground the coffee cups.

As I was playing around with the lay out and placement, I felt that the coffee sleeves just didn’t quiet pop, so I decided to take a mini Tim Holtz stencil and some black soot distress ink, just to add a little something to the sleeve. I also went around the coffee cup and lid to add shading and depth.

For the inside of the card I really wanted to tie everything together so I pulled out the distress oxide inks and the same stencil and added ink

Once I had all my elements done to my liking it was time to add everything to the card base.

The base of the card measures slightly 4½ x 5¾, the vellum rectangle measures 5½ x 4¼ and the distress panel measures 4 x 5¼

I added the vellum on to base with foam tape and then the heart background directly on top of the velum, I added the cups on to the vellum oval first as I wanted to see where I could hide the adhesive, because as we all know vellum is a bit of a pain when it comes to adhering it.  I added the sentiment with some foam tape in areas where the coffee cups overlapped. I then added a little extra sparkle using the Tonic clear glitter brush,

I love finishing off the insides of my cards tying everything together, so I pulled out the oxide inks and stenciled the hearts onto white cardstock. I stamped on the sentiment using the “coffee break” sentiment set and added to little cups from the “Love you a latte” set from Lawn Fawn using ripe persimmon ink.  To finish it off and have it coordinated that much more, I ran it through my die cutting machine with the same scallop rectangle that I had used previously.

I hope you were able to gain some inspiration and motivation from this and welcome any comments you may have.

Don’t forget to come play along with us on the Challenge Facebook page.

Have a wonderful Valentines.

Nancy
