Distress Oxide Sprays

Tuesday with Tara {take 263} negative space poinsettia

Happy Tuesday and happy September!  We are kicking off another month of daily challenges with our Random Acts of Cardness with today’s theme, Foliage.  I’m using “Poinsettia Pieces” by Tim Holtz, which I got after Christmas last year, paired with a sentiment by Gina K Designs.  I thought the foliage of the poinsettia could have a non-seasonal vibe if I avoided traditional colors.  By sticking to shades of green, this card has an almost tropical feel to it, though with a different sentiment it would be lovely for Christmas too.

Since these dies are designed to showcase the negative space, I wanted to play with color and some for the background behind them.  I sprayed a variety of Distress Stains & Distress Oxide Sprays in shades of green and blue on watercolor card stock, then splattered with some water and spritzed with Perfect Pearls. It’s a subtle variety of colors with a pretty shimmer to it!

I cut the panel just slightly larger than the white piece I’d cut the poinsettia pieces from, then glued them together and onto a black card.  It’s easy to keep the design simple when you are working with such pretty, intricate dies.

I hope you like my card and are ready for a new month of inspiration with Scrap ‘N Stamp!  Be sure to check out the challenge page on Facebook and play along, and plan to stop back here on the blog Friday for our September Blog Hop!

Hope to see you then!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 240} Type Talk x2

Happy Tuesday!  It’s been a wild ride this week… so much has changed in our world and I know for many of us it means a LOT more time at home.  If you are one who is home, I hope you have been able to find some time to be creative.  We would LOVE to see what you’re making and especially if it includes stencils, we’d love to see it shared in our facebook group!  I am one who works in an “essential” industry (pharmacy) and have been too exhausted to even put much thought into creating… good thing I had these cards finished and ready to share with you today!

My cards feature the fabulous Type Talk stamp set by Concord & 9th.  For my first card, I’ve used the floral image that is part of the set, colored loosely with watercolor pencils in the neutral shades of brown and teal.  The typewriter was stamped onto some paper which I inked up with Frayed Burlap Distress Oxide Spray– the mix of colors in this single spray was the inspiration for the entire card.

As you can see, the card itself is pretty simple.  I fussy cut the two stamped elements and adhered them to a stitched edge die cut panel.  I embossed my sentiment in ivory and added some stamped dots in a row above and below it.  The fun details that finished it off were some white Nuvo Crystal Drops on my typewriter keys and a bit of thin twine.  As you can see there is a touch of glitter on the flowers as well.

Here’s a more masculine version of the card (very similar, but a smaller scale than this one I shared previously).  The typewriter was stamped on the same piece of inked cardstock as my other card.

I also used the fun interactive element that I featured on my previous card.  You can see it here, as well as a closer look at the typewrite keys.  I love how the Nuvo drops picked up some of the color from the paper, making the keys more ivory than a stark white.

Wishing you creative days ahead… whether you are in full quarantine or doing some sensible ‘social distancing’ be sure to spend some time MAKING something and enjoying the way the arts are coming together during these difficult days!

Inky hugs (from afar),

Tara

3D Peony Sympathy Cards

Hello and Happy Wednesday, Nancy F on the blog sharing a set of cards I created out of necessity due to a family member passing away not too long ago.

I am featuring the Crafters Companion Peony Trio 3D embossing folder, Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Sprays and Nuvo mouse along with some extras polishes from my stash.

With all the cards I make over the year you would think I would have had something in my stash, but alas I did not and so I needed something quick and simple yet elegant and thus my cards were born. I hope you like and find some inspiration.

How I came up with this design was really a “happy accident” as Bob Ross would say. I wanted to figure out a way to make the 3D image stand out and get my colouring done in a quick and simple way.

What better way to add color then with distress inks. Since I have been on an oxide spray kick as of late, I thought hey why not continue with the theme and try them with the embossing folder, so that’s what I did.

I pulled out some cardstock from my stash in both black and white, and cut it down to fit in the embossing folder. I sprayed the folder directly with the oxide ink and then I ran it through and the end results were very cool.

Some I did just with the oxide spray and some of the panels I would add spritzes of water as well, just to see what kind of effect I would get. The look was so cool in fact that I went on to make about 20 or so different backgrounds with both oxide sprays and mica sprays. Stay tuned, as you will see these later in other blog post.

Once all my backgrounds were completely dry it was time to play around with different products from my stash that sadly aren’t carried in the store but I have linked to something very similar.

I used Opal Gilding Polish, Nuvo Mouses, and Prima Mattalique waxes to bring out the flowers on the backgrounds. I applied all of this with just my fingers which allowed for more control over the different products. For finishing touches, I pulled out my trusty black soot distress ink and went over all the details gently just to bring out the flowers even more.

For the cards itself, each measured differently as I would trim them down to different sizes to make up for certain little blunders, so this time I won’t be adding in the measurements. I do apologize.

The sentiment I decided to use was from the Deepest Sympathy set from My Favorite Things. I used Archival ink as I stamped them onto vellum. I heat set each of the sentiment strips with my heat tool so I would not smudge the ink. I have had issues with stamping on vellum as I am always in a rush and forget to heat set.

To assemble the cards I wrapped the vellum sentiments around the floral image, taping into place on the back. I then added fun foam to the back of the panel and adhered it onto the black layer, and flat onto the card. I kept it very simple this time around as I really wanted the focus on the main images.

I am sorry if this is a bit rushed, both kids are sick, whiny and clingy, which means this mama is on very little sleep and a lot of caffeine and crashing slowly. I hope you were inspired I really love this embossing folder and have some other fun cards in the works for you. Stay tuned,

Have a wonderful week

Nancy F
