Chinese New Year – Magic Slider Card

Hi Everyone!  My name is Chala and I am exited to join the Scrap ‘N Stamp Design Team!  This group is incredibly talented and I am looking forward to sharing my creative ideas.  I have also been admiring all the submission that are posted on the Scrap ’N Stamp Challenge Page on Facebook.  If you have not already checked it out, I encourage you to head on over to gain inspiration from these creative members!

Now, on to today’s card!  It’s a long one, so grab a cup of tea or a glass of wine and snuggle under your favourite blanket!  There are interactive links throughout should any of these products catch your eye!

February 5, 2019 marks the official beginning of Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig!  I thought it would be fun to review my stock of stamps and dies to create a fun card for this occasion.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had a lot of items from the Lawn Fawn product line that would work and decided on making an interactive card.

I pulled some red and white card stock from my stash and I will be using these colours along with the Lawn Fawn Magic Slider die set.

I also think using the New Magic Picture Changer (which at the time of this post is on pre-order and on SALE at Scrap ’N Stamp) would be a lot of fun too!

I will do the majority of my die cutting to start off.  This way I have all the pieces ready to assemble.  I begin with the single rectangle die and cut a piece from acetate.  You can use clear packaging or purchase acetate.  I just used projector transparency that I had on hand.  This acetate will act as the “magic window”.  I will then cut a second piece from white card stock.   This will eventually line up behind the acetate piece when we assemble the card.

I cut the base of the slider and stitched window from red card stock and the slider mechanism and rails from white card stock.  I cut two of the slider rails as I like to stack them.  I find that by stacking them it gives a little bit more room for the slider to move more freely.

Now that I have these pieces cut, Let’s move on to stamping.

I am using the cute little pig from the Hay There stamp set.  You will want to use some form of stamp platform so that you can ensure that you can line your images up perfectly on to the material you are stamping on.  I will stamp Hamlet (I decided to name the pig that…) onto the acetate with StazOn Jet Black ink.  It is very important that you use the Stazon ink as it, well…stays on!  If you use any other ink on the acetate it will not dry and will smear…and you will be very sad.  😔 Once that is stamped, I will carefully set the acetate aside to ensure it dries completely, being careful not to touch the freshly stamped image.

I then stamp Hamlet again, this time on to the second rectangle piece that we cut out of white card stock. I use Memento Tuxedo Black ink this time as I will later be colouring Hamlet in with my Copic markers.  This is where your stamp platform comes in handy.  You will want to make sure that the white rectangle lines up exactly with where your acetate piece was.  The end effect being that you can place the acetate on top of the white rectangle and both images will line up perfectly.  This is what ultimately will make the card “magic”.

I want to change up the image on the white rectangle just a bit so that there is more of a surprise when the slider is pulled up.

I will grab the speech bubble from the Happy Village set and the “Nia Hao” phrase from the Reveal Wheel Sentiments and stamp those just above Hamlet to make it appear that he is saying “hello”.

The next step is to colour Hamlet in with my Copic markers.  You can use whatever markers, pencil crayons or other mediums you like.  Just making sure that you keep things one layer to allow the slider move freely.  The Copic markers I used are as follows:

Grass:  YG13

Sky:  B32

Hamlet: R83 & RV10

Hamlet’s Hooves:  C4

I also used a white gel pen for detail on his cheeks.

It is now time to assemble our slider!!!  This part is a bit tricky if you don’t know how to do it and it can be a bit confusing to explain.  Not to worry! At the end of this blog will be a link where you can watch a video of how the whole card come together at my YouTube Channel!

Let’s begin….

I use Be Creative  Scor Tape (3mm), this is a strong adhesive and great for when you want to ensure that there will be no lifting of your project.  I adhere it around the edges (face up) of the acetate piece and set that aside.  Then I will use my tape runner and adhere the coloured Hamlet piece onto the red base of the magic slider.  Ensuring that the image lines up so that you can see it nicely through the “window”.  I lay the acetate piece overtop of the coloured piece making sure it lines up exactly and fold the top window portion down onto the acetate.  I find it easiest to use a craft pick when trying to remove the adhesive backing.  My favourite one is the Tim Holtz Retractable Tonic Craft Pick for the simple fact that it retracts and I have less of a chance of stabbing myself.

It is now time to insert the white slider portion into the top slit and pull it all the way up.  You will use this to help when you lay down your white guides.

Again, I use the Be Creative Scor Tape (3mm) to adhere the two guides together and then adhere them to the bottom base around the coloured image. I have a cool trick on my video of how I adhere score tape to delicate shapes.   You will then remove the top adhesive liner and fold the top over sealing the slider inside.  You can now die cut one of the fancy slider pulls and adhere to the top of your slider mechanism.  I die cut two from red card stock, glued to my card with my Gina K Connect glue and threaded some yellow embossing thread through to give the card some interest and so that you could pull the slider easier.

We have now completed the hardest part of this card and it is time to play with the creation to make sure everything slides nicely!

Let’s move onto the card base.  I will be using a standard A2 side folding card (4 1/4” x 5 1/2”).  It is best to use a 110lb weight or as thick a card stock as you can get as this is where we will be adhering our magic slider to.

I didn’t have any patterned paper that would work so I found some digital paper that I liked from my Silhouette Design program and printed it off.  I cut it down with my Fiskar sure cut paper trimmer to fit the front of the card and adhered it to the base with a tape runner.

I wanted to decorate the inside of the card as well.  For that I used the fortune cooke and banner from the Lawn Fawn Year Eight stamp set and stamped with Memento ink on the inside of the card.  I also wanted to create my own sentiment inside the banner.  It was a bit tricky as I had to remove the ink from the lettering with a baby wipe, however, I think it turned out okay!  I went over the outline of the banner and wrote “Happy New Year!” with my Copic Liner Pen.  I used Copic colours E33, E43 and E53 to colour the fortune cookie.

It is now time to adhere the slider to the base of our card this time using the Be Creative Scor Tape (5mm).  To finish off the card I added some gold sequins with some Ranger Glossy Accents.

Here is the finished card!
