RANDOM ACTS OF CARDNESS – DAY 10 – ALCOHOL INKS

One of my favourite mediums to play with these days is alcohol inks. Ranger has such an incredible number of gorgeous colours to play with. Not only that, but they’ve added to their line of surfaces that you can use the alcohol inks on! The most common surface to use is Yupo, which is a non-porous, smooth surface. It’s actually a synthetic substrate, more like plastic than paper. Now, Yupo is also available in Regular, Heavy Weight, and Translucent. The regular and translucent are both 104 lbs, where the Heavy Weight is 144 lbs. My project today uses the heavy weight, which is perfect for standing up to heat embossing.

HEAT EMBOSSED ALCOHOL INK BACKGROUND

If you were to use regular Yupo, and then try to heat emboss, you will end up with a very warped & wavy piece of Yupo! It’s just not thick enough to withstand the heat.  Luckily, that where the heavy weight comes in. Use a piece of 5″ x 7″ heavy weight Yupo.  Next, attach a felt alcohol ink pad onto the applicator handle. For large areas, I like to use the rectangle applicator, but you can use the smaller round ones, as well. Just be sure to use the felt applicator, not the foam ones used for regular inks! Choose colours that will blend well together; I chose Gumball and Boysenberry, with the Gilded Alloy. Apply each colour to the applicator, and then a few drops of alcohol blending solution.

Create the background by dragging the felt applicator across the Yupo. For this background, I did it at an angle, instead of left to right. Keep doing this, applying more inks and blending solution to the felt applicator as needed.  I decided that the Gilded Alloy wasn’t showing up enough, so I added some directly to the panel, and then blended it in by dragging the applicator across it.

ADD THE EMBOSSING

Once your Yupo piece is dry, set it up in your stamp platform. Place the Picket Fence Studios Botan Peony stamp face down onto the piece, where you want to stamp. Pick the stamp up with the platform lid, and cover it with Versamark ink. Stamp firmly down onto the inked panel. To make sure you have a good impression, ink and stamp again with the Versamark. Next, remove the piece from the platform and cover it with gold embossing powder, Set the powder with a heat tool. You’ll notice that it does take a bit longer than usual to set the powder, but just keep moving your heat tool slowly over the panel, until all areas are done.

On a separate strip of white cardstock, stamp the sentiment fro the MFT Well, Hello stamp set first in dark pink ink, and then Versarmark ink, using your stamp platform again. Cover it with clear embossing powder, and heat set.

Now you’re ready to trim your heat embossed Yupo panel, and layer everything together. Create a slightly larger background panel of metallic gold paper, and a card base of dark pink.

With the weight of the Yupo, the extra gold panel isn’t necessary, but it adds a special extra touch! I’m sure that if you send this to a friend during these days of distancing, they’d be thrilled to receive it.
