Tuesday with Tara {take 11}

Happy Tuesday!  I’ve had a request for a tutorial on another project that was featured on the Ranger blog a few years ago, but is no longer up on their site.  I originally called it a Simple Summer Card set, but by changing the colors and stamps a bit, the technique is lovely for autumn (and winter!) too so I thought I’d share it with you here today!

I used a simple torn paper masking technique to create stripes of blended color.  You can see from the card samples some colors that pair together nicely, I like using yellow as combines with so many colors beautifully!

 To start, pre-cut a white layer of cardstock and tape torn copy paper over it onto your craft sheet, leaving a space for your ink to be applied.

Using an ink applicator tool, start with your lightest colors and layer them over the torn paper.

Continue layering and blending more shades of Distress Ink until you are happy with the shades.

Ink up a background stamp with one of the lightest colors you used and stamp it over your inked background.

Lift the torn copy paper to reveal your finished background!  Oooh, aaah… isn’t it pretty?

Stamp a foliage or tree type image over your background in Black Archival Ink.  Use coordinating colors of Distress Markers to create a 3D embellishment with a butterfly stamp to add a bit of texture to your simple card.

Layer the piece of white cardstock onto a black card base and your card is complete!   Repeat and create in a variety of colors and with assorted sentiments for a nice gift… or leave the sentiment off and add them as you need them 🙂

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 9}

Happy Tuesday! For most of us, it’s the last Tuesday of summer vacation… time is flying by, but hopefully you’ve got some fun memories from the summer to take with you!  Here’s a cute little project you can create & save some of those summer memories!  It’s a tag booklet I made that was featured on the Ranger blog, but all the fun details are here for you today on Scrap N Stamp Canada!

Here’s what you need to recreate my project (though I encourage you to change it up and make the project your own!)

  • Ranger Black Archival Ink
  • Ranger Surfaces: Kraft Tag #8
  • Ranger Surfaces: Manila Tag #8
  • Ranger Non-Stick Craft Sheet
  • Ranger Multi-Medium: Matte
  • Ranger Ink Blending Tool and Foam
  • Tim Holtz Distress Ink Mini: Walnut Stain
  • Tim Holtz Distress Paint: Salty Ocean
  • Dylusions Stencil: Staggered Brickwork, small
  • Dylusions Ink Sprays: London Blue, Vibrant Turquoise, White Linen & Melted Chocolate
  • Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Cling Stamps: Camera from Travel Blueprint Set
  • Tim Holtz idea-ology: Elements Tissue Tape, Tiny Attacher with staples, Crinkle Ribbon, Filmstrip Ribbon, Seasonal Chitchat Stickers
  • Other: Adhesive Foam Square, Paint palette

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Stamp camera blueprint twice on a manila tag in Black Archival Ink.
  2. Use Dylusions Ink Sprays to paint the images.  If you have water brushes filled with paint, use those  *budget tip* If you don’t, simply pour a small amount of your desired colors into a paint palette and paint with a brush.  Add multiple layers of color to darken and white dylusions to add highlights.
  3. Don’t waste the extra ink- pour it on your craft sheet and ink up some Crinkle ribbon with it!  Crumple up and set aside the ribbon to dry.  It will be used to tie up your booklet later.
  4. Place a Dylusions stencil over a tag and apply Distress Paint over it onto the tag.  Lift the stencil and flip over onto another tag and ‘stamp’ off the excess paint.  Allow both tags to dry and select your favourite to be the front of your tag booklet.  I used the ‘stamped’ kraft tag.
  5. Cut out the colored cameras, layering the lens portion of the image with adhesive foam squares.
  6. Ink the edges of the camera image and the tag with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.
  7. Select some words from the Seasonal Chit Chat Stickers, stick them on your Craft Sheet and ink part of each of them with Distress Ink.  Adhere to opposite corners of the tag.
  8. Embellish your tag with Tissue Tape and lay bits of Film Strip Ribbon over it.  Adhere with Mini Attacher.
  9. Spritz Dylusions Ink Spray in London Blue in the center of the blank space on your tag and allow to dry.
  10. If you’d like some extra thickness, brush Matte Medium to a second tag and adhere to the back of this tag to stabalize it.  Once dry, adhere the camera image over the ink spot in the center of your tag.
  11. Before you clean up- use the sprays, inks & stencils you from this tag to add simple decorations to assorted manila & kraft tags.  These will be the pages of your tag booklet- fill them with photos, memories & ephemera from your summer holiday!  Tie it all together with the Crinkle Ribbon you inked up earlier.

Hope you have an excellent Tuesday! See you next week 🙂
Inky hugs,
Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 6}

Happy Tuesday!  It’s a rainy day for me here in North Carolina, so I’m hoping to squeeze in a bit of time in my creative studio getting inky & playing with my new Big Shot machine!  I’ve got some dies that need playing with… and I’m looking forward to sharing with you what I create in the near future 🙂

Today I want to share with you an answer to one of the questions I’ve gotten asked most often when I demo or teach TAG projects- what do you DO with them?  One thing I like to use tags for (besides being a great way to experiment with techniques and just hang on to as inspiration pieces!) is to use them as a focal point on a card.  The card today features what I consider a ‘standard’ #8 tag on a 5×7 card.  Add some ink and some washi tape and you’ve got an easy way to transform a tag into a great card!

My tag was created using a mix of scraps, stencils, embellishments & stamps that I combined to celebrate my Dad’s recent 60th birthday!  I won’t go into a lot of details about the tag, but I hope it shows you a fun way to take some bits & pieces and turn them into a cohesive piece!  The big number was stenciled, outlined and then Clear Distress Crackle Paint was painted over it for texture (you probably noticed by now that I love adding crackle to my projects!).  The idea-ology numbers were painted with a bit of Distress Paint to make them pop and add more color to the tag.  I used black & white elements like the stickers & washi tape in several spots to bring it all together!

To create the perfect card for my tag, I took my base card, which was white, and cut a 1″ strip from the front open edge.  This made my card front a perfect size for a tag to be centered on it!  I used an inking tool to apply Distress Ink around the edges of the card front (lay the card flat on your craft sheet to get good coverage on the open end of the card without getting ink on the inside of your card).  Because I had worked with a mix of Distress Ink & Paint on my tag, I chose to apply Distress Paint along the inside edge of the card, this is the part that shows since I cut that 1″ strip.  Once that was dry I applied a strip of washi tape beside it.  You can make your card look like a perfectly coordinated project by using colors and elements that are the same on the tag and the card base.

Inky hugs,
Tara
