Tuesday Tutorial – Adding Texturz to your life!

It’s Spike with you today on this Tuesday Tutorial to show you how to add more Texturz to your life! I’m talking about the Sizzix Texturz Texture Embossing Plates! They’ve been around for a while and on to Kit #19 now. Many haven’t heard of them. Many aren’t sure how to use them. Sooo, let’s get to it! 😀

TexturzTut18_Spike

In each “kit” there are 3 Texturz plates with a different design on each side, which would give you 6 patterns in total and at the time of this blog post, they’re selling for $11.99 per kit which is quite a deal! That’s under a toonie for each pattern!!!

Side 1
Side 1
Side 2
Side 2

One great advantage is that pattern on the plate measures 5 3/4″ (14.5cm) x 7 1/4″ (18.5cm) so you can add texture to a larger area than other conventional ways of embossing!! One thing to remember is that it will only emboss one side of your cardstock, compared to something like the Cuttlebug Embossing folders where it embosses from the top AND bottom creating a deep emboss.

Don’t let that deter you as there are so many different patterns to chose from which is a BIG advantage. Just go check out the Texturz Section! I’ve given cards embossed using these Texturz plates to card makers and they were stumped which Cuttlebug folder I’ve used! 😉 Oh what fun! 😀

For today’s card you’ll need:
TexturzTut3_Spike
-Sizzix Texturz Texture Plates #17
-Fleur de Lis Shapeabilities Pendants
-Ticket/Tag Corner Punch
-Whitewash Core’dinations Cardstock
-White Cardstock
-Blue Core’dinations Cardstock
-Peggy’s Pretties
-Sanding Block
-Mini Glue Dots
-3D Dots
-White Gel Pen
-Big Shot or Cuttlebug and accessories.

Again as I’ve mentioned before it’s all in the sandwich stack as long as you don’t force anything through your machine. Below are a couple of sandwich “recipes” that may differ from what has been seen elsewhere but these have worked well for me and have produced a nice embossed image.

Sandwich Stacks
Cuttlebug – A Plate, Sizzix Texturz Plate, Cardstock, 2 Tan Embossing Mats*, B Plate.
Big Shot – Multipurpose Platform TAB 1, Sizzix Texturz Plate, Cardstock, Sizzix Silicone Rubber Mat* or Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat*, Impressions Pad**.
One thing I love about the Big Shot, is that they print all the sandwich stacks right on the multipurpose platform! This “recipe” is on TAB 1.

TexturzTut14_Spike

* – these are interchangeable only that the Sizzix Silicone Rubber Mat is Larger than the 2pk of the Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mats, you may want a larger mat to use more of the embossing surface when embossing larger pieces
** – a Cutting Pad will work too but it may not provide as deep an emboss as the Impressions Pad

1. Emboss cardstock
I’ll be using Core’dinations Whitewash cardstock which looks like this:

TexturzTut15_Spike

A coloured piece of cardstock with white on the top, it’s like icing!! (sorry, it looks pink in the photo)  As I want to sand off some of the white, I want to place it white side down on the Texturz Plate then finish the sandwich.

TexturzTut11_Spike

After running it through, it’s got some texture but may be a little difficult to see in the photo.

TexturzTut7_Spike

2. Sand it

TexturzTut6_Spike

3. Cut the corners with the Ticket/Tag Punch

4. Mount onto Blue Core’dinations Cardstock

5. Cut out and emboss Spellbinders Fleur De Lis Pendant (without a centre) from White Cardstock.

6. Mount White Pendant on Texturz background

TexturzTut5_Spike

7. Cut and emboss the large Pendant and the 2nd largest Pendant together on blue Core’dinations Cardstock

As the dies come separately:

TexturzTut20_Spike

Stick them on the Spellbinders Magnetic Placement Mat to prevent sliding and use as you would normally.

TexturzTut19_Spike

To get the large Pendant with the centre cut out:

TexturzTut22_Spike

and smaller one:

TexturzTut23_Spike

8. Mount the smaller blue pendant in the middle of the white pendant

TexturzTut4_Spike

9. Sand the large blue pendant

10. Mount the large blue pendant over top the white pendant using 3D Dots.

TexturzTut1_Spike

11. Add Peggy’s Pretties using mini glue dots and faux piercing using White Gel Pen

TexturzTut2_Spike

And there you have it! Sizzix Texturz demystified with a little bit more! I hope you enjoyed today’s Tuesday Tutorial. Thanks for visiting today and as always we love to hear from you!

Tuesday Tutorial – Stenciling with Spellbinders using the New Pendants

On today’s Tuesday Tutorial, it’s Spike playing with the brand spankin’ new Spellbinders Pendants and Borderabilities! WAHOO!!

I was just sooo super excited when Kate received these super quick and I drove as fast as I could to get there!
I’ll be showing you how to stencil with Spellbinders as it’s easily forgotten after you’ve cut and embossed with your dies.
I’ll also show you have versatile these new Pendant Spellbinders are to give you a lot of creative flexibility and dimension! Oh it’s lots of fun!
Let’s begin! The Spellbinders Pendant and Borderabilities Set that I’ll be using are both called In Spades. When you crack open the any of the pendant sets, you’ll see 4 different dies all meant to work well and compliment each other. Any of those smaller 3 pendants can easily be used in the center of the larger die.

DieView

See how well they all fit?

Spades1

Spades3
Spades2

If you decide to use them in this way, I suggest you use them with the Spellbinders Magnetic Placement Mat to keep the center die from sliding around.

To make the card in this tutorial you’ll need:

-Big Shot or Cuttlebug
PendantSupplies-Spellbinders Shapeabilites Pendants In Spades
-Spellbinders Borderabilities In Spades
-Memento Inks (Angel Pink, Lilac Posies, Rose Bud)
-Core’dinations Cardstock from the So Mod! Assortment
-Rhinestones (Hot Pink and Soft Pink)
-Sanding Block
-Piercer
-Ranger Cut n Dry Stamp Pad Foam
-3D Squares

For this tutorial, I’ll just be using the dies singly starting with the largest die.
First cut and emboss using the large die on white cardstock.

After embossing, keep the piece of paper in the die. You may need to grab a piece or two of Scotch Removable tape to secure it into place (keep in mind you need to keep the holes clear).

TapingDie

Flip it over so you have the die on top.

InkingDie1

(I then placed it on some scrap white paper to protect the surface) Grab a piece of foam. I like to use Ranger’s Cut-n-Dry Stamp Pad Foam, that I cut into 1×2″ pieces for sponging. I like to use it because it sponges ink on smoothly and evenly. Grip the sides of the sponge and ink it on the ink pad using a circular motion.

InkingDie

Apply the ink to the “holes” in the stencil using a circular motion.

InkingDie2

After using the Angel Pink ink, I added an additional colour (Rose Bud) for accent in some areas. After the entire stencil is inked up, this is what you’ll get.

InkingDie3

I then cut out some dark pink Core’dinations cardstock using the 3 dies to see what they looked like. As these dies are smaller, I suggest to have a tool handy (such as the Tweezer Bee as it’s got a sharp tip) to help poke it out.

PendantDie4

And don’t they all just look cool? I decided not to use the piece on the right.

PendantDie5

Because they’re Core’dinations cardstock, they’re screaming to be sanded!

PendantDie6

Here’s the piece fully sanded.
PendantDie7

For the background mat, I embossed the large pendant (to create extra dimension) on the dark Pink Core’dinations cardstock and then used the In Spades Borderablities to cut, emboss and paper pierce.

background1

Then to finish it off stenciled with Lilac Posies.

background2

Putting it all together using some 3D Dots and some rhinestones. Voila!

Tuesday Tutorial – Getting to Know Your Nesties for Mother’s Day

Welcome to another Tuesday Tutorial!  This week I’ll show you how to use Spellbinders Nestabilities as it’s one of the most common questions we receive.  I will be using the Big Shot since that is the machine I have but I have included info on how to use your Cuttlebug too!

If you already know your Nesties pretty well, scroll down to the Peony card below.

Before we start, let’s look at a Nestability up close. In case you’re wondering which Nestability I’m using it’s one of the new Spring 2009 releases, the Peony. All Nestabilities work the same way, the only difference between them is their shape and size.

One side of the die is flat (Ridge Side Down)

nestienocutside2

Now flip it over and you’ll see a ridge in the center of the die.  It’s this ridge, although it doesn’t feel sharp, that does the cutting.  To see it better, click the image to magnify.

nestiecutside

What’s great is that in every package of Nestabilties is an instructional card.  Keep this as your reference as it lists the ‘stack’ or ‘sandwich’ that works in several different die-cutting and embossing machines.
Now you may see that I’ve listed a sandwich stack that is different from what is written in the package.  Not to worry, there are different ways of stacking depending on your machine (there are slight differences in machines even within the same manufacturer).
Just remember, NEVER force anything through your machine.  It’s always better to err on the thin side and run it again with a shim (cereal box thickness cardstock) than to ruin the machine.
Once you’ve figured out what sandwich stack works the best for your machine, be sure to make note of it for future reference.

Cutting with Nestabilities

Be sure to pick up an extra set of Cutting Pads for the Big Shot or B Plates for the Cuttlebug. This way you can keep one set nice and flat for “embossing” and the other for “cutting”.  Below is a picture of a well used cutting plate.

dscf3296

Cutting Sandwiches:
Big Shot – Multipurpose Platform on Tab 2, Cutting Pad, Spellbinders Nestie (ridge side up), cardstock to cut, “cutting” cutting Pad
Cuttlebug – A Plate, C Plate, Spellbinders Nestie (ridge side up), cardstock to cut, “cutting” B Plate

1. Place the Nestie ridge side down (using the largest size Nestie) on the piece of cardstock (Core’dinations Cardstock for this project) you wish to cut.
cuttingoutnestie

2. As I don’t want the Nestie to slide off the cardstock, I need to temporarily secure it in place and that’s where I bring out a Post-It or sticky note. **Since I put this tutorial together I’ve found a great tape that Kate carries – Scotch Removable tape – that you can use to hold your Nesties in place and it doesn’t ruin your paper at all when you remove it. Works even better than Post-It notes because you can see through it if you are trying to place your die in a specific place on patterned paper.
cuttingoutnestie2

3. Now flip it, so the cardstock is on top and the Nestie is on the bottom
cuttingoutnestie3

4. Place your “cutting” plate on top and run it through your machine

cuttingoutnestie4

After you’ve run it through the machine, do NOT pop out your cut cardstock from the die.

Embossing with Nestabilities

Embossing Sandwiches:
Big Shot – Multipurpose Platform on Tab 1, 2 shims, Cutting Pad, Spellbinders Nestie with already cut cardstock in it (ridge side up), Spellbinders Tan Embossing mat, “embossing” cutting Pad
Cuttlebug – A Plate + shim + B Plate + Spellbinders Nestie (ridge side up), cardstock to emboss, Spellbinder’s Tan Embossing Mat + “embossing” B Plate

6. Set up your embossing sandwich as above
embossingnestie

7. Don’t forget your shims! Then run it through.

embossingnestie2

8. Check out your work!  Tada! You have a cut and embossed Nestie shape!  Easy hey?

Mother’s Day Peony Card

For this Mother’s Day Peony card, the materials I’ve used are:

Spellbinders Nestabilties Peony
S.E.I. Designer Collection Pack – Bridgeport (base floral pattern paper cut to 5 1/4×5 1/4″)
Core’dinations Cardstock (card stock base cut to 5 1/2×11″)

Glue Dots

1. After you’ve cut and embossed your Peony Nestie from above. Sand it.
peonycard

2. Cut down one inch at all the arrows.
peonycard1

so that it looks like this: (sorry for the blurry photo!)
peonycard2

3. Then grab 3 pencils and place them around one petal section as shown
peonycard3

4. Curl the ends around the pencils as shown by the arrows, this will give the flower some shape.
peonycard4

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4, for an additional 3 times.  Each time using a smaller size Nestie than the last and using different coordinating papers.

6. Cut out the base floral patterned paper using the largest size Nestie and glue it onto the green card stock base.

7. Assemble your layers, sticking each flower onto the card.  Added some Peggy’s Pretties and voila!

A special card for a special lady! A Peony Card for Mom!
