Tuesday with Tara {take 254} Busy Beaver & Painted Flag

Happy Tuesday!  We are gearing up for our July Blog Hop, which will be a few days early since we wanted to celebrate Canada Day!  Plan to stop by tomorrow, July 1 for the fun!  Today I’m sharing two “throwback” cards with you, which I firs introduced for a blog hop back in 2017.  The theme for today in our ‘Random Acts of Cardness’ Challenge is PAINT and that’s what I used to create these fun flag inspired backgrounds.  I hope  you enjoy!  First up is my Busy Beaver Card:

I created a background using some book print paper coated with white gesso, I then used a heart stencil (this one is by Dina Wakley) and some Distress Paint in two shades of red, Barn Door & Festive Berries, to create part of my ‘Canadian flag’ background.  I like combining two shades of paint for some subtle variety and texture.  I used the 1″ Alphanumeric Dies by Tim Holtz & Sizzix to cut CANADA out of my background as well, I love how easy it is when there are multiples of each letter to work with!  The rest of the card is from the Busy Beaver stamp & die set– I stamped on watercolor paper and used watercolor pencils to color this cutie up.  The maple leaf die is from a sweet little tag that was a gift with purchase (sold out years ago- sorry!).

Here’s a closer look at the stamp set- it comes with some sweet sentiments 🙂  This adorable Busy Beaver Stamp & Die set was created by Raya’s request to help us celebrate Canada’s big 150th Birthday!

My second card uses the same background as the first, but instead of the beaver I added the ‘kind is classy‘ sentiment by Concord & 9th.  I also use that cute little maple leaf tag!  This sentiment seemed perfect for my Canadian card, since kind is definitely a word that describes most Canadians I know!

Here’s another look at both of my cards together- I really love the imperfections of the painted background!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 85}

Happy Tuesday & Happy Valentines Day!  I hope it’s a great day for you filled with time spent enjoying the people and things you love! ❤️

Today I’m sharing the card I made for my Valentine, my husband, Brian. As you can see from the sentiment (by Hampton Art Stamps) I love him more than coffee (that’s a whole lot *wink*).

I paired this fab sentiment, which I white embossed on a black die cut label, with a coffee cup die cut by Tim Holtz, which I inked up with a stencil & Distress Ink (offset in two colors to fill in the space) and finished with a corrugated sleeve & watercolor heart (a cutout left from a previous project).  Black paint splatter tied everything together for me!

IMG_9207I must confess, I wanted a fun & colorful background for my die cut pieces and was dreaming about the Distress Oxide inks that are coming out soon… have you seen how they look on kraft cardstock? Sigh. They are definitely on my wish list!  But since they are still on pre-order, I realized I had another option for a colorful background on kraft and pulled out my Distress Paints.

After dabbing some color onto the card front, I misted it with water to blend colors and add some fun drippy details.  I alternated drying with my heat tool and adding more paint and water until I was happy with the blended background.  I set this aside to dry under some weight (sizzix bigz dies did the trick!) to make sure my card was flat before adhering my layers. Hope you like it!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 42}

Happy Tuesday!  Today I’m sharing with you a project I did a while back using Tim Holtz’s Distress Paint marbling technique (you can see some step by step photos of the technique on his blog here- skip to step 8!) I used 3 small tags and added some stamped details and Distress Ink around the edges as well before finishing with my focal images.

The bird stamps are by Memory Box (both birds are from one stamp, inked & stamped separately to cover two tags) and the sentiment is from my stash (Inkdinkado).  They are stamped simply in black Archival Ink, then embellished with a little bit of Distress Stickles.  Simple details like colorful Prima flowers, bling & crinkle ribbon finish this card.

A card layout like this is a great way to showcase small tags you’ve used to experiment with background techniques.  Your backgrounds will shine when you keep the images simple and bold.  If you have Distress Paints and haven’t played with them in a while, pull out a few colors and try out this technique!  It’s a fun one 🙂

Leave me a comment and you could win a Memory Box bird die– it matches the stamps used on my card!  I’d love to know, do you use tags when you are trying out new (to you) techniques?

The winner of our giveaway from last week is KELLY- thanks for your comment 🙂  Send us a message on facebook or use this form with your mailing address and we’ll send your prize (a butterfly stamp!) off to you!

Have a creative week!

Inky hugs,

Tara
