Quick and Easy Christmas Cards Using Cuttlebug Embossing Folders

Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a handmade card or gift but sometimes it’s hard to find time to get them all made. So we thought we’d give you a little help with some quick and easy ideas for cards that are all made with Cuttlebug embossing folders and some basic supplies. None of these cards take more than 15 minutes to make and we’ve included a supply list and basic instructions for each one.

We hope they inspire you and make your life a little easier this holiday season.

PS You will find that we use 3D foam squares quite a bit on these cards and although you can do them without you will find that it adds a lot dimension and makes your cards have that extra “WOW” factor.

Card Holder Made with Nestabilities and a Cuttlebug Embossing Combo

I was trying to think of something different that I could make to dress us the dining table this Thanksgiving when I remembered about a big tub of binder clips that I had bought at Staples a while ago with the intention of making photo holders. Well, life got busy and the photo holders didn’t get done but I decided they would make awesome name card holders for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Here’s what I came up with …

card holder

These were super easy to make. I only used 2 papers from My Mind’s Eye 29th Street Market collection (Woven Together/Girly Green and Sunburst/Golden Rays) to cover the clip and make everything else. Because these papers are double-sided it’s easy to make projects that coordinate beautifully. I used the patterned sides of the papers to cover the clip and for the pumpkin and letters and then used the back side of both sheets for the leaves and cards. This cute little pumpkin embossing set has been sitting on my craft table for a couple of weeks now and I’ve been itching to use it on something. It just seemed like the perfect little accent for this project.

(Click on the picture for a larger view)

Here’s how I put them together :

Step 1:

Cut a 2″ wide strip of the plaid paper (approx. 3″ long) and attach it to the binder clip with Scor-Tape. I used Scor-Tape because of the instant bond and it won’t come apart later. Some other double-sided tapes aren’t strong enough to do this.

Step 2:

Cut and emboss the pumpkin in the floral print. Trim off the stem and leaves.  Cut and emboss the stem and leaves plus the top of the pumpkin in green (the back of the plaid paper). Cut and emboss two extra leaves. Attach all the green pieces to the back of the pumpkin with Tombow Mono Aqua. Put two glue dots on the back of the pumkin where they will touch the silver handles on the binder clips. Now cut a thin strip of any of your scrap pieces and attach it over the back of the pumpkin to cover the glue dots and hold everything in place.

Step 3:

Cut and emboss a scallop rectangle from the S4-131 set from the buttercream color which is the back of the floral. I used the largest die. Then cut another rectangle with the S4-142 set from the green color which is the back of the plaid. For this one I used the second smallest die. Layer the green piece on top of the buttercream piece with foam dots, leaving the bottom center open.

Step 4:

Cut the letters for the name using the Sizzix Naturally Serif Alphabet Decorative Strip from the plaid paper and attach to the green scalloped rectangle with a Quickie Glue Pen. I love this little pen for attaching small letters or die cuts. The tip is fine enough that you can put just a little glue where you want it and it doesn’t seep out around the sides. Don’t know how I got by without it! And, if you haven’t used any of the Sizzix Decorative Strips, check them out. They are a super value at just $19.99. Where else can you get a complete alphabet at that price? I love the size because it’s small enough for cards but works on scrapbook pages too.

And that’s it! Slide the name buttercream paper in between the silver handles and you have a personalized place card for your table. Change the papers and the die cuts and you could make these for just about any occasion – Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, birthdays. The possibilities are endless!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope this gives you some ideas that you’d like to try.

More Cards Made with the NEW Cuttlebug A2 Embossing Folders & Combos

I just couldn’t stay away from all the new Cuttlebug embossing folders and combos! They are so much fun to work with. You know how it goes…one thing leads to another and pretty soon it’s 1 am and you can hardly keep your eyes open but it doesn’t matter because you’ve been in your own little world for the fast few hours and it’s all good.

Here are a few of my late night creations and there’s more on the way. They aren’t quite finished yet so they will have to wait for another post.

Enjoy! And…don’t forget that you can add comments to any of our posts – just use the box at the bottom. We love to hear from you.

card made with cuttlebug a2 embossing combo friends forever

I really liked how easy it was to make this card. The hardest part was keeping the ink on the embossed areas and I found that using a small foam tip applicator worked best for that. I used VersaMagic chalk inks in Pixie Dust and Sage because of the soft, matte finish that they give. Just remember, use a light touch and very litle ink when you are adding color to the embossed areas. You can alway add more if you need to. The saying and embossing folder come together in the Cuttlebug Friends Forever combo. There are six different combos and you can definitely mix and match between them. I found that the Bazzill cherry vanilla and aloe vera cardstocks worked great with these inks. A little pink rhinestone, some ribbon and it was done. Quick and easy.

One of the other A2 embossing folders that I couldn’t wait to try was the Floral Screen. The picture on the package doesn’t do it justice. The embossed image is great and worked really well on the next card.

For this card I chose French Vanilla cardstock and matted the embossed image with honeycomb and brown cardstock. The corner accents were cut from brown cardstock using one of the dies from the Cuttlebug Vintage set. And of course a little more inking, this time with VersaMagic wheat and pumpkin spice. I used the smallest dies in the Nestabilities Long Classic Rectangles and Long Classic Scalloped Rectangles to create the layers for the stamped saying which is from the Melissa Frances clear stamp set Simply Said. Instead of brads I opted for latte pearls. I think they went better with the overall look of the card.

Something I’d like to mention for anyone that is a beginner cardmaker is that one of th easiest ways to create a more interesting card is to pop up some of the layers with foam squares. It adds dimension and makes your cards look more polished. You don’t need to add them between every layer, just one and then pop up your embellishments with them too. You’ll be surprised at what a difference it will make.

And now, my last little card. And it is a little card. I had some scraps left from my assorted pack of Nostaligia Coredinations Color Core cardstock and I thought it would be fun to make a little note card that could be added to a bouquet of flowers or a gift bag.

card made with nestabilities and cuttlebug a2 embossing combo with gratitude

This little card was so quick and easy that I’m defninitely going to make a few to have on hand. A set of these in an altered clear top tin would make a really nice gift. So, how easy are they? Well, all you have to do is cut the notecard with second largest Nestabilitie in the Long Classic Scalloped Rectangle set and score and fold it in half. Then cut a white mat about 2 1/8″ x 2 1/8″ and adhere to the card. Now take a 2″ x 2″ piece of  a lighter color of the Coredinations cardstock and emboss it with the folder in the Cuttlebug With Gratitude combo. TNow comes the fun part. Sand off the embossed area to expose the colored core. Add a little Stickles Diamond glitter glue to the centers of the flowers. Mount it onto the card from with foam squares, tie and little ribbon and you’re done! It’s a great way to use up some of your bits and pieces that are left over from other projects and we all have a few of those.

Hope these cards give you some ideas and inspiration.
