Tuesday with Tara {take 274} Darling Deer

Happy Tuesday!  Today I’m sharing a pair of simple Christmas cards that fit today’s daily challenge theme: wildlife.  I challenged myself to make two cards using the positive and negative die cuts from Tim Holtz’s Darling Deer dies together with a snowflake stencil by Paper Rose.

The first card uses the negative space of the deer.  I arranged them on an ivory panel and held them in place with washi tape before running them through my Big Shot.  I then inked up some of the white space with Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink through the snowflake stencil, fading the ink as it came near to the deer.  I selected a gel print background I had created a while back and inked over the white space on it with the same Distress Ink to blend them together and adhered it behind the openings.  The shades of green and blue give a fun retro vibe to this otherwise outdoorsy card!  I finished off the card with a Christmas sentiment from the Festive Overlay stamp set, stamped in Mowed Lawn to coordinate with the green card base I mounted it on.

For this card I added the winter trees stamp by Paper Rose that I used for our Sweater Weather blog hop, this time stamped tone on tone for a more subtle effect.  I had some technical difficulties with my stamping and almost tossed this one, but in the end decided it still worked as a background!  I added a bit of Ground Espresso Distress Ink to the deer and a sentiment (from the winter trees set) in the same brown.  I had a scrap of the gel print paper left from the first card, so I trimmed it in a slight wave and mounted it to the bottom of the card for a bit more color and texture.

Here’s a look at the two cards together.  Once you have the design figured out (I find that really is most of the work when you’re creating simple cards) they came together quickly and would be easy & fast to reproduce.

Personally I’m not great at mass producing cards, so I’d love to play with a design like this and do pairs in multiple colors.  Using gel prints in the design and selecting colors from there would be a fun way to mix things up, but you could also use patterned paper from your stash.

Tuesday with Tara {take 271} Plaid & Pumpkins

Happy Tuesday!

Today’s card is for those people in our lives with birthdays on/around Halloween.  I’m combining my new MFT Buffalo Plaid Background stamp with a birthday wishes die cut and some autumn pumpkins… with an easy Halloween twist! As it turns out, everything is by MFT.

This card came together pretty quickly for me, since I used a few pre-inked/colored pieces that I had on my work space.  I stamped the plaid in black on a green inked panel of water color card stock.  Because of the texture in my paper, it has more of a vintage feel rather than a crisp new plaid.  I’d also colored up these pumpkins as extras when I was working on another card.  These were my ‘imperfect’ ones, with a bit of bleeding outside the lines, so I inked up the edges with a brown Distress Ink.  Again, this works with the vintage feel the card was getting.  I continued on with the theme and added a bit of white crocheted lace trim.  Next to the white sentiment, the trim seemed to really tie everything together!

As I played around with the arrangement for my pumpkins, I got the idea to transform one of them into a jack-o-lantern. Since I don’t have any ‘face’ stamps to use, I pulled out a black marker and got to work.  Anyone can draw a simple face like this- especially if you practice on a scrap of paper first to get the sizes right!  I finished everything off with a few dots of Bottle Green Nuvo Crystal Drops for that little bit of shimmer.

Tuesday with Tara {take 267} Autumn Blessings

Happy Tuesday!  Today’s challenge word is “campfire” which may have had you wondering a bit… or maybe you are a big Distress Ink fan like me and you knew exactly what to expect- a project featuring the newest Distress color, Crackling Campfire!  I’m kinda loving how Tim Holtz is releasing a full set of each color at one time (and thankfully not too close together so my bank account can handle it) as it really lets you play and experiment with the different mediums.  I’ve used several on todays card, hope you like it!

Today’s card also features the gorgeous Skeleton Leaves die set by Tim Holtz.  I cut them from a piece of watercolor paper which I had inked up with Crackling Fire Distress Ink, as well as a bit of Fossilized Amber & Carved Pumpkin.  Once I cut the leaves, I added a bit more Crackling Fire- both Oxide & Regular Distress Inks, and a bit of brown to add some depth to the edges of the other two leaves.

I took a piece of book print which I had applied a thin layer of white gesso to and trimmed it down to size over a pewter layer.  After inking the edges, I splattered a mix of both sprays- the Spray Stain and the Distress Oxide Spray.  I was curious to see how they would differ on the prepared surface.  I misted it lightly with water and left it for a while… when it still wasn’t dry I misted it a bit more and pressed some tissue paper onto it to life some of the color and help it dry faster.  This gave a much softer background than I initially had, and some fun splotchy bits as the inks reacted with water.  FYI, most of the lighter spots are from the Distress Oxide Spray, the deeper from the Spray Stain.

The final element of my card is the sentiment- another one from Autumn Blessings by MFT.  I embossed it with the Embossing Glaze over the oxide ink on vellum for a soft finish.  A mini stapler (Tim’s Tiny Attacher) ads an easy & fun way to adhere the vellum.  I also added a bit of clear adhesive behind the sentiment so it would be hidden.

I hope you enjoyed my first play with Crackling Campfire!  You’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the near future… can’t wait to try different color combos with it, it’s such a gorgeous color perfect for autumn!
