My Neighbourhood

Hello. Kia here with you today to share this card I made using stamps and dies from Concord & 9th called City Stacks.

My inspiration for my card comes from my neighbourhood.  I am an apartment dweller, who fortunately overlooks a beautiful old street that has homes which were built in the 20’s and 30’s. They are huge homes with beautiful old trees and wonderful landscaping. And, fortunately, we do not have any other apartment buildings that block the views. And, as you can imagine, autumn is stunning in my neck of the woods.

I am using Arches cold press watercolour paper for my card today, but any watercolour paper can be used. I am also using distress inks for this card. I have both the markers and mini cubes, and if I am missing a colour in one, I will have it in the other.

I started by stamping the building using jet black ink, then painted the sky using tumbled glass and blueprint sketch. I then did the building using wilted violet. The green is the background that will show when I attach the tree stack, so I have painted it using mowed lawn.

I then stamped and die cut the tree line stack, keeping in mind that this stack will be behind the row of house, so I cut my paper accordingly. As I do not want a lot of bulk here, I go along the bottom of my cut piece with my bone folder, which flattens it somewhat, therefore not adding extra bulk. I then watercoloured the grass with the mowed lawn, and the trees I did using dried marigold, fozzilized amber, spiced marmalade and a bit of candied apple.  I also went around the trees with the mowed lawn as I did not want any of the white showing.

I then moved on to the house, stamping and die cutting the piece to allow for my sentiment. I painted the houses in worn lipstick, tumbled glass, dried marigold and used fired brick for the doors and roofs. I added squeezed lemonade in the windows for light. I have some hickory smoke on the window ledges and steps. And, it is while I am typing this and looking at the card below that I realize I did not paint the flowers in the window boxes. Well, the flowers were pulled to make way for the coming autumn. 🙂

I finished my card by stamping one of the sentiments from the set in jet black ink. So, in the end this is a three layer card, yet it does not feel like it has that many layers.

I hope you have enjoyed this card today and thank you for visiting. The products used today can be found in the store, I have also listed them for you below.

Tuesday with Tara {take 164}

Happy Tuesday!  I had an entirely different project in mind when I sat down to make this card… but sometimes certain pieces have a mind of their own and you’ve got to go with it!  I was planning on a masculine card, but these funky little flowers I had scattered on my desk were so pretty I decided to give a bit of a masculine twist to them, pairing them with this sentiment stamp from the ‘Words for Thought‘ set of stamps by Tim Holtz, which is quite blocky.  I inked up the sentiment with a few shades of Distress Marker and misted it lightly with water before stamping directly on my card front.  I added a bit of distress ink around the card edges to soften the color palette.

I cut a strip of deep orange card stock to fit beside the sentiment and started my little floral arrangement there.  I added some brads to the flower centers to tie together with the slightly industrial look the sentiment has… a touch of Nuvo Glitter Drops in Honey Gold finished it all off.

It was a fun card to piece together and try to find the elements to make it work… maybe next week I’ll have that masculine card to share with you 😉

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 5}

Hey!  Happy Tuesday!  Since I hear things have gotten a little BIRD CRAZY in the store, I thought I’d share a card I made with those awesome stamps… this one was made for my husband (we just celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary yesterday!) for Valentine’s day, but it’s just a fun take on the stamps that I hope you’ll enjoy!

My crazy bird was stamped twice in black on watercolor paper and colored up with Distress Markers & a water pen.  If you’re lucky enough to purchase the new dies as well as the stamps, you’ll be able to easily cut out some pieces (like the wings) to layer 3d over the base image.  I used some fine tip scissors and foam squares to add some dimension 🙂  All of this was layered over a bird stamped on a small tag, so I didn’t have to worry about cutting out the feet or smaller details like that!  A bit of clear texture paste was applied to my tag through a small detail stencil to act as a resist under some Distress Ink which I did around the edges and corners.

I used some vintage (aka really old ones that I’m not sure are still available!) alphabet stamps from Hero Arts to stamp my sentiment and the big 4 is from a Tim Holtz BIGZ alphabet die.  The hearts & patterned paper were also from my stash, but you can totally mix things up with whatever is in YOUR stash to create something similar yourself 🙂

I used a clear Wink of Stella glitter pen to add some shimmer and some Glossy Accents on the eyes to make them pop a bit as well.  These crazy birds have been CRAZY popular and I think even Tim Holtz was surprised by it, so it’s fun to see the new additions to the collection that you can use with these stamps to really get some mileage out of them!  They’re really a ton of fun to play with, and if they make you smile I hope you’ll pick up a set and get to work/play with them 🙂
Have a very happy Tuesday and a creative week!
Inky hugs,
Tara
