Welcome back to the Scrap ‘n Stamp blog! Today’s Random Acts of Cardness prompt is MANDALA. I don’t use mandalas a lot on my cards, but I wanted to play with a layering die set from Birch Press Designs, Kaleidoscope. If you’re unfamiliar with this company, they make beautiful, intricate layering dies that can be used in a variety of different ways. For my design, I was inspired by the colours of our current Random Acts of Cardness board. Here’s my card:

I picked three colours of cardstock from Memory Box’s Sunny Orange 6×6 cardstock pack. This is heavyweight paper, but the dies cut it beautifully. I adhered my layers together and then cut the resulting mandala in half with my trimmer. For my white panel, I wanted a subtle ombré effect from the top, so brayered a little squeezed lemonade distress ink on a gel plate and pressed my cardstock onto it. (I could have also blended the ink, but it’s fun to play around sometimes.) I used the middle colour of cardstock for the card base and to die cut my sentiment.

Tuesday with Tara {take 316} Whoopsie

Happy Tuesday!  Today’s card is another featuring the gorgeous floral outline stamp set by Tim Holtz.  As I mentioned earlier, I played around with it and made a bunch of backgrounds.   This card features one of my favorites.  It really reminded me of fabric, which is why today’s challenge word is CHINTZ.

For this card, I once again used the new Prize Ribbon Distress Ink.  I inked my stamp & misted it with water before stamping and repeated with a second stamp (there are three in this set) to create a pattern across my white card stock.  I then took a water brush and rubbed some Scattered Straw Distress Ink on my craft sheet as a palette and added some loose color to the roses.  I then took a bit of the blue and mixed it with the yellow that was left to blend a pretty pale green for the leaves.  Once it was dry, I used a blending brush to add more Scattered Straw to the edges and splattered over the surface with some Prize Ribbon Distress Spray Stain.

You can sort of see in the close up photo that I did a bit of ‘flicking’ color off my brush after painting the leaves, but it’s very a very fine splatter which adds to the texture but didn’t do anything for the design 🙂

I finished the card by mounting on some dark blue Cardstock and adding a sentiment by Heffy Doodle.  A bit of yellow twine and some bling finish it off!  I think this is my favorite sentiment (and will probably be the most used) sentiment from this stamp set.  I’m really the worst at making cards and not sending them… it’s forever a goal of mine to improve on that!

Water You Up To?

And here we are… the last Monday and second last day in August! Today’s Random Acts of Cardness prompt is WATER, and I’m sharing a couple of different watery cards with you today. In both, I tried to incorporate water in both theme and technique. Here’s my first one:

Not over my love of Whittles dies yet! Here I’m using Whittle Dolphin and Whittle Sunshine for my card, along with a sentiment from Whittle Sealife Sentiments. (Possibly the only thing I don’t love about Whittles is typing it over and over…) 😂  For the main panel, I did some two-step ink smooshing – first smooshing the bottom third in a puddle of salty ocean distress ink + water, making sure some “splashed” up the panel. Once that was dry, I smooshed the top part in some tumbled glass ink + water – which hardly shows in the photos. I used the same inks, plus some weathered wood, to watercolour my dolphin. The sun is coloured with squeezed lemonade and carved pumpkin. After I die cut my panel, I had enough left over to stamp and emboss the sentiment on a piece and cut it into a banner. For the card base, I swiped the salty ocean ink all around the edges of it to coordinate.

I made a number of smooshed card bases at the same time (sitting outside on our deck, it was lovely!), and used a second one to make another card.

For this one, I played with distress oxide inks and one of my favourite smooshing techniques – using plastic wrap! Keep in mind, I’m a clean and simple cardmaker… this is about as technique-y as I get. 😉  After smooshing my panel in tumbled glass, salty ocean and faded jeans oxides, I crumpled some plastic wrap and pressed it on top before letting it dry. (Plastic wrap, bad, I know; but I do save and reuse it, so there’s that.) For a little variety, I used wilted violet (along with weathered wood) to watercolour my dolphin, Whittle Happy Octopus and Whittle Shark. The panel is cut with a deckle die, as is the sentiment, even though there’s no die that exact size – I just cut it twice!
