Happy Tuesday y’all!

Have you been watching all the exciting new product releases at the Creativation 2018 trade show?  I know my Facebook feed has been full of inspiration and videos showing the booths and fabulous new products… lots of drooling going on here!  It’ll be fun to see new stuff arrive in the store in the coming weeks & months!

We just finished having a big snow storm over the past week here in NC, and I was going to share a snowy card with you… but right now, flowers are more appealing!  So, I’ve got some art journal pages that started out at the Dina Wakely class I took several months ago instead 🙂  Dina showed us this technique (supposedly a background, but I can’t bring myself to cover it up) for abstract flowers, all about being loose with your brush & paint and letting the flowers come to life without over thinking the design… it’s harder than it sounds!

I started with a solid blue background, then roughly painted my darkest layer with a wide brush.  I added a lighter layer over it (notice the fabulous streaks I got painting over the wet layer) and finished with yellow centers.  I added leaves the same way, going from dark to light green, then brought in some umber for accents of brown.  Around the flowers, I added a layer of white-ish paint (loosely mixed bits of elephant and umber into it) and while that background was still slightly damp, I removed some of the color through a stencil with a baby wipe.  It adds such a fun texture- I love it!  I discovered that Scribble Sticks are simply AMAZING for adding splatter to a project… seriously, just flick the tip of the crayon with a wet brush and you have this awesome, vibrant splatter spots!  I love it, so of course I had to finish off the page with a good splattering!  (And did you see… theres a new set released! Yay for more colors!)

Here’s a closer look at the textures on this page with just some simple, abstract painting… this is on one of the handmade watercolor paper pages in the Media Journal.

As I worked on my page, I started wiping off my paintbrushes on the facing page in the journal… then picked up leftover paint on my palette (aka the craft sheet that was my work surface) and filled in the entire background with random bits of color, then added a few details and a word… and eventually a completed page was born!

And here’s the two pages as they sit, side by side, in my Media Journal:

I had fun creating these abstract florals.  To be honest, I didn’t love it at first… but it’s definitely grown on me, and I’ve been playing around with different brush sizes for a completely different look!  I hope you like it, and maybe it’ll encourage/challenge you to stop thinking and just CREATE something.  Try abstract florals… they’re kinda fun!  And keep an eye on the store to see some of the new products available for pre-order!  There’s so much exciting new stuff coming up, it’s going to be a creative year!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Happy Tuesday & Happy Halloween!

I sat down in my studio determined to create one more halloween project to share with y’all… and since the ideas playing around in my head didn’t seem like they’d fit on a card, I pulled out my Mixed Media journal by Dina Wakley and opened to a spread of kraft pages that had previously been used as a spot to clean off my brushes… a mix of orange, brown & blue brush strokes in the background became the base for these pages.

Initially, I decided I wanted to paint a pumpkin to use together with the raven dies.  As that page started coming together, I added coordinating elements on the left page so they would have some flow between them, even though they could also stand alone (with completely different focal points).  It’s probably a different way to do art journalling… but I’m kinda new to it, and I think it can be whatever you want it to be!  I used some pieces from the ancestors paper dolls again for the left page…

…and the ravens are a great compliment to my pumpkin (I wanted to try again a technique I’d learned for painting pumpkins!).

I went old school and pulled out stickers for my title (colored stickers can easily transform to black with a marker!).  I added a variety of stenciled bits here and there, some washi tape and bits of gold (paint on the pumpkin and a pen for my journaling).

I’m working on being free with my ‘messy’ script for journaling- I love the look of it and am learning that the best thing is not too think too hard about what it looks like!

The left page, especially, is out of my comfort zone… but that’s kinda the point.  I journaled about learning to enjoy the ‘spooky’ aspects of Halloween with my family 🙂

I hope you have a fabulous & fun spook-tacular day!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you’ve had a great week and that you enjoyed our Freaky Friday Blog Hop (if you missed it, it’s not to late to check it out and comment for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to the online store!  We’ll announce the winners on Friday!).

While the hop was happening, I was making a hot mess in an all day Art Journaling class with Dina Wakley!  We had such a fun time, and I tried some new things and stepped out of my comfort zone… it was fabulous!  Today I want to share with you the ‘big’ project we did in her new Mixed Media journal– a six ‘page’ spread with one continuous theme.  Wow!  Since this was a class, I’m not going to be giving you any step-by-step details, though I will encourage you to take a class with Dina if you ever get a chance, she’s a really great teacher!  If she doesn’t teach in an area near you, she’s got classes available online and some great youtube videos to check out as well!

As I said, we worked in the new journal and our spread started with a page of watercolor paper, then burlap (2 sides) then a large tag (2 sides-inserted with her Printed Paper Tape) and finally another page of watercolor paper.  I used images from the ‘Words in Faces‘ stamp set as my focal point.  My color scheme was primarily Lapis, Fuchsia and Cheddar paints from her collection.  I also used a variety of other stamps & stencils from her collection… lots of fun stuff to work with!

Space doesn’t allow for me to share a ton of close up photos… but I hope you can get a taste of the creative fun I had!  So many things about this stretched me out of my comfort zone, and I loved it!  Hopefully it inspires you to move out of yours this week… and make a hot mess 🙂

Inky hugs,

Tara
