Happy Monday! Today’s Random Acts of Cardness prompt is SWEETS, and I chose a big stencilled birthday cake!

The Cake Maker stencil from Simon Hurley Create has all kinds of options for creating different styles of cakes, and as long as you keep a few things in mind, it’s fun and easy to use. The main thing to remember is MASKING! The stencil has a lot of different images quite close together, so masking all around the part of the stencil you’re using is important. And you know how I figured that out, lol. Making this particular cake, I also discovered using smaller blending brushes – such as the smaller Picket Fence brushes – helps to keep ink in control.
I started with the candles, using spun sugar and picked raspberry distress inks along with squeezed lemonade and carved pumpkin for the flames, then masked them so I could add the cake base in spun sugar. The stripes are picked raspberry. Next I added the cake stand in Colorbox silver and embossed it with Wow clear sparkle embossing powder. Finally, the white icing was added with Versamark and Wow detail white powder.
I wanted a fun font for the sentiment, so picked this pair from Concord & 9th’s Birdie Talk turnabout set, inked in Versamark + Memento rose bud, and embossed with the same sparkle embossing powder as the cake stand. I die cut my panel with a stitched die and found some bright pink cardstock in my stash for the card base. For the finishing touches, I added some sequins from my stash with Stickles in the centre, and some shimmer to the candle flames.

Phew! I think that took longer to describe than to make! I hope I’ve inspired you to make some paper sweets today!

One Stencil, Two Cards

It’s Lindsey back today with you, with two birthday cards featuring one Picket Fence Studios stencil – Waffle Squares. I have to admit, this stencil stumped me a bit when I first tried to use it… despite the name, it’s a circular stencil that doesn’t fill the entire card. As I learned more about ways to use stencils, though, I decided there were lots of ways to use it! Here’s my first example:

To start, I masked off the top and bottom of my card with some masking paper, then lightly ink blended a mix of three distress inks. Then I put the stencil over top and ink blended the same three colours, resulting in a tone on tone background. I couldn’t resist using my Snarky Cats again, and thought this one paired perfectly with the sassy sentiment from My Favorite Things.

For my second card, I used the stencil in a more traditional way:

Another thing I learned as I used stencils more on my cards: mask everything! 😀 If I hadn’t masked all around the edge of this stencil, there would definitely be a smudge somewhere. I added my sea critters, an embossed sentiment, and some bling from my stash for another fun and bright card.

Hi Everyone and HAPPY WEEKEND!!
Making it through the week is cause for a celebration!
Susan here today with a pile it on card and a clean and simple card.
Two very different styles with the same stamp set. Hopefully one appeals to you and inspires you to
be creative this weekend.
I used the Party Time Stamp set with the coordinating dies from Colorado Craft Company for both of my cards today. It’s designed to be a Christmas/New Year stamp but I wanted a birthday theme so I masked off the bit of holly that was on the jar of mixing tools and voila – no more holiday theme.
The prompt for Random Acts of Cardness today is PARTY and if this card definitely makes me feel like I’m at a party.
I started with stamping the two images, then colored them in with some Prismacolor pencils. I cut them out with the coordinating dies then worked on the card base.
I used the Lawn Fawn Stitched Rectangle Dies – the large one from both the small and large set to cut the frame. I inked up the frame and the card base with some Distress Oxide inks then using the Birthday Bash Set from Wendy Vecchi I added some party decorations.
I added the mouse with the gift to the card base, then added the frame with some craft foam, then added the mouse with the drinks. On a card this busy the only way I could think to add the sentiment is to emboss it on black card stock and adhered to the frame.

My second card uses the same supplies but I went for a much cleaner and simpler card.

I stamped the image of the mouse with the present then cut off the bow because I wanted him to be dancing in front of a cake. I added a candle in place of the bow, colored it in with strawberry, chocolate and vanilla colors to make an ice cream cake.  After coloring the image with Prismacolor pencils I cut it out with the coordinating die and added it with craft foam to the panel that was left over from the frame I cut for the first card. I added a few stars then a simple sentiment and added it to a card base with some more craft foam.
