Tuesday with Tara {take 123}

Happy Tuesday!  Today’s card is built on an old background I created which I hadn’t managed to turn into a card… I shared it here on the blog in it’s original form, and got a bit of a chuckle when I went looking for the original post.  Miracles do happen folks, I completed a card that I started back in September 2015!  LOL  If you want details on my yummy background, please visit that post. Today I’m going to share how I completed the card 🙂

Textured backgrounds like this one can be a bit tricky to work with… and I’ve actually pulled this one out several times and tried layering different things over it.  I finally decided to use the images from the Lawn Fawn pumpkin spice set to create another autumn-ish card before I transition fully into Christmas card mode!

I wanted to use the dies for the stamp set, so came up with a fun stacked mug design for my card.  I stamped and die cut three mugs, then cut slits in two of them to play with the stacking arrangement.  I used my background design to pull colors for my mugs and pulled out my Copic markers to see if I still knew how to use them… my goal was quick coloring, so my blending is less than awesome, but it worked!  I had this cute sentiment from Impression Obsession I thought worked well with the images, so stamped it on a pre-cut label shape, which I trimmed down to align with the card fold.  Once everything was assembled, I added touches of Distress Stickles to be my spice.

I believe Distress Stickles have been discontinued, but if you find some you should grab them up!  Or use them if you have some in your stash- they dry with a matte finish, leaving just the glitter behind, no glossy residue.  This makes them perfect as a spicy accent on my mugs of deliciousness (looks more like a mocha than a pumpkin spice latte to me, this time around!).  I used two brownish colors from my stash for this look.

Here’s a bit of a closer look at the card (I couldn’t bear to crop out all the leaves in the first photo!)

I challenge you this week… pull something out of that pile of ‘unfinished projects’ and see what you can do to turn it into a finished piece.  It feels pretty great!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Happy Tuesday & Happy Halloween!

I sat down in my studio determined to create one more halloween project to share with y’all… and since the ideas playing around in my head didn’t seem like they’d fit on a card, I pulled out my Mixed Media journal by Dina Wakley and opened to a spread of kraft pages that had previously been used as a spot to clean off my brushes… a mix of orange, brown & blue brush strokes in the background became the base for these pages.

Initially, I decided I wanted to paint a pumpkin to use together with the raven dies.  As that page started coming together, I added coordinating elements on the left page so they would have some flow between them, even though they could also stand alone (with completely different focal points).  It’s probably a different way to do art journalling… but I’m kinda new to it, and I think it can be whatever you want it to be!  I used some pieces from the ancestors paper dolls again for the left page…

…and the ravens are a great compliment to my pumpkin (I wanted to try again a technique I’d learned for painting pumpkins!).

I went old school and pulled out stickers for my title (colored stickers can easily transform to black with a marker!).  I added a variety of stenciled bits here and there, some washi tape and bits of gold (paint on the pumpkin and a pen for my journaling).

I’m working on being free with my ‘messy’ script for journaling- I love the look of it and am learning that the best thing is not too think too hard about what it looks like!

The left page, especially, is out of my comfort zone… but that’s kinda the point.  I journaled about learning to enjoy the ‘spooky’ aspects of Halloween with my family 🙂

I hope you have a fabulous & fun spook-tacular day!

Inky hugs,

Tara

Tuesday with Tara {take 121}

I’m not very big into Halloween crafting (though I do love anything pumpkin related!) but I guess it’s because I’m drawn to birds that I just had to have the new set of Tim Holtz raven thinlets dies!  I’ve had several ideas running around my head to do with them… but a last minute need for a birthday card gave me a good opportunity to put together a quick card and the raven was a great seasonal focal point!

I die cut the set of dies from black card stock that I had put adhesive on the back of so they would be ready to go… and started looking around my messy desk for inspiration that was ready to go!  I had a small piece of watercolor paper sitting there, covered with a rainbow of colors since I’d been using it to wipe off my paintbrush after watching Dina Wakley paints in my journal 🙂  It was pretty chaotic looking, but I decided it could make a fun background so I painted over the entire thing with Dina’s blackberry paint.  While it was still wet, I set a stencil (by Dyan Reaveley) over it and wiped through the stencil with a baby wipe.  The chaos showed through and the results are actually pretty fabulous!  I think I’ll be repeating this wild mix of colors again soon!

Since I was in a hurry, I used my heat tool to speed the drying process.  While it set, I found a blank card and a birthday sentiment, which I stamped in black.  I then trimmed down the card around the sentiment to make it closer to the margin I wanted around the colored panel.

I selected some teal twine to add texture and wrapped it around the panel before adhering it with foam tape to my card.  The raven settled in nicely on the right side of the panel, and a small rhinestone eye finished everything off.  It’s a very simple card, but the vibrant colors and bold design really work for me!  I added another of the die cuts to the inside of my card to tie everything together.

It was a fast and fun project, and it’s got me wanting to continue creative play… hope you like it!

Inky hugs,

Tara
