Tuesday with Tara {take 318} Bookprint Hugs

Happy Tuesday!

We’re more than half way through September so I thought it was time to do a project that’s sorta back to school inspired… the theme over on the challenge blog is bookprint, and that’s what I’m featuring on the background of my card!  I did some autumn inspired ink blending over the Funky Leaves stencil by Picket Fence Studios- using shades of Distress Ink.  It’s a blend of Crushed Olive, Twisted Citron & Crackling Campfire.  Personally, I can’t wait to see the leaves changing all around me and this card just gives me a little hint of it.

I had some fun blending the same colors on a scrap of paper, from which I die cut the ‘hugs’ die by Honey Bee Stamps.  The ‘Bitty Buzzwords’ stamp & die sets is a recent splurge for me (I rarely buy the matching sets, normally pick one or the other) and so far I like it!  You see a bit of brown in my blend as well, since I didn’t get the tones I expected overlapping Crushed Olive & Cracking Campfire with each other.  I’ve been loving die cuts layered over vellum lately, so I was happy to find a small piece of vellum to work with here!

I finished off the card with a bit of twisted twine and some copper-toned sequins.  I stamped the rest of the sentiment on the same Kraft card base that I layered my bookprint onto.

I made a second very similar card, but it didn’t photograph well (something funky happened to my colors) but if you’d like to see it, feel free to check it out on my personal blog!

Inky hugs,

Tara

HAVING FUN WITH ZIGS

Hi Everyone!
It’s Susan and I’m playing with Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers today for the Random Acts of Cardness Challenge. I have two cards to share with you. the first one literally took just minutes to make.
I started with 3 different blue markers. I scribbled them onto a piece of Ranger watercolor card stock (first pic below) then sprayed it with some water (second pic). Next I used my heat tool to dry it. I continued with three purple markers, sprayed on some water then dried it with my heat tool. Next I scribbled a dark blue marker at the top, spritz it with more water then used a brush to blend it over the whole panel to darken it up.

To finish the card I stamped the Picket Fence  Capture Life in Color stamp with Versafine Nocturne ink. Because watercolor paper isn’t smooth I used my MISTI and stamped the image 3 or 4 times to get good coverage. I die cut the panel with the second large die in Lawn Fawns Stitched Rectangle Die set and added it to the card base with craft foam. I used a white Posca Paint Pen to add a few highlights.
The next card took a little longer to make. I stamped the three gnomes from Spellbinders Holiday Gnomes Stamp Set with Versafine Nocturne ink. I used my MISTI, stamped it a few times to get a solid image. I left the stamp in the MISTI so I could stamp it again after I finished coloring.  This next picture shows how I did the coloring. I chose two colors for the hat, added the darker one into the bottom corners and part way up and then a lighter color. You can see the two colors on the right side of the hat. Next I took a wet paint brush and pulled the two colors together and blended them further up the hat. I hope that makes sense.
I continued coloring all three gnomes using the technique I just described.
Once I colored in all the gnomes I used a dark and light gray to add some shading to the bottom. I used a light blue to add a little color to the background ( I scribbled the marker onto a block, spritzed it with some water and blended it onto the panel with a paint brush. I added a light gray around lower portion of the gnomes the same way I added the light blue.
Happy Stampin’
and thanks so much for visiting!
Stay safe everyone!!
Susan

Tuesday with Tara {take 309} blowing hugs

Happy Tuesday!

I know… that’s not how it works, we don’t blow hugs. We blow kisses… but my challenge word today is “BLOW” and my card is sending hugs, so it is what it is.

This card really feels to me like a comedy of errors.  Every step seemed to turn into a hot mess and yet somehow, I cleaned it up a bit and made a card.  All those errors were exhausting though!  LOL.

My mission was to use the Alcohol Ink Air Blower, since it was a new tool in my stash that I hadn’t used yet.  I had aspirations to share some fabulous technique with you and even attempted to record a video… but I hit a few bumps along the way.  The first of those being that I have no idea where my alcohol inks are right now.  Once I gave up on finding them (I’ve got an inner ear infection right now and “looking high & low” just makes me dizzy!) it occurred to me that I could try blowing some of my spray inks!

I selected my Dina Wakley Gloss Sprays since they are less absorbent than some of my others and I knew they would move around on the papers well.  It’s been a while since I played with them, so I had to re-learn a few things (like how they don’t work too well for smooshing two papers together to transfer ink!) but I finally started to figure them out and came up with this.  I’ve also got a whole pile of backgrounds that are ready to be transformed another day!

For this card, I simplified and skipped the color blending- working with just the Lemon Gloss Spray.  I poured a small puddle on a piece of white Cardstock and used the blowing tool to spread it out into a splatter design.  I was planning to use the Twiggy HUGS I had die cut from metallic orange card stock, so I knew yellow was a good choice! Once the paint was partially dried, I added some splatters of the Magenta Gloss Spray on top.  You can see where the colors blended together in some spots giving a bit of orange to the design.  These sprays really pop, and give off more gloss depending how thick they are painted!

I die cut a large stitched rectangle panel so I could mount it onto a white card base.  When I played around with the placement of the word, it just didn’t seem like quite enough (even with the addition of the sentiment duo by Heffy Doodle). Then I remembered the stitched circle from the Picket Fence Slimline die set, and decided to turn it into a shaker card.

This is where I had more of a hot mess… as I’m sure you can see by all the wrinkles (aka texture) in my shaker window!  I wanted to do a simple pocket style shaker, so I reused some packaging from one of my clear stamp sets.  I got the brilliant idea to seal the edges with my hair straightener (since I haven’t been using it on my hair with all the humidity lately!) and if I was a bit more patient it probably would have been a brilliant idea.

  • What I did right: place the plastic pocket between pieces of paper so that the plastic wouldn’t melt onto my straightener.
  • What I did wrong: forget to turn down the heat once it finally warmed up.

I doubt I need to say much more than that… since you can clearly see that things got a little too hot and got all wrinkled up on me!  So much for straightening, eh? LOL

I was pretty tired of the mess I was making at this point, so I decided to just go with it and share my lessons learned with you!  I did manage to keep it together when I stamped my sentiment on vellum and left it overnight to dry.  (I used Picked Raspberry Distress Oxide Ink).  I finished it off with some sequins and a touch of Studio Katia bling, and overall I like it.  Maybe I’ll try it again and work out some of those wrinkles… If nothing else, I hope my hot mess makes you smile!

Inky hugs,

Tara
