Dina Wakley

MFT Floral Blooms

Hello Crafty friends, Nancy F here today to share on the Scrap’n Stamp blog. I decided to do something a little different, yet still playing along with the monthly challenge. I am doing an all mixed media style card, from used books pages to gel pressing. So grab your favorite beverage and sit back and enjoy it.

mixed media pages, stamped the floral blooms on to pages of an old book and heat set it with some embossing powder. I then added gesso around the flowers

I started by stamping out these beautiful Flowers in bloom set from My Favorite things on to the pages of the book using my stamping tool and Versa Clair nocturn ink .  Then I heat set with clear embossing powder to help the image stand out from the writing, then repeated this process four times.

I also had too many ideas flowing through my head by this point, from art journaling layouts to more cards. So stay tuned for more projects.

adding colour to the flowers with distress crayons and Dina Wakley paints

Now that all the stamping and embossing was completed it was time for the fun messy part, getting in with the paints and gesso. This is always my favorite part.

To bring the focus more to the flowers I decided to add Dina Wakley media white gesso to the book pages, carefully going around the flowers. This really helped to mute the print down some and allow the flowers to pop. I decided to actually add some gel medium to the petals of the flowers, I felt this would seal the paper and allow me to wipe any mistakes away easily.

finishing off the edges of the book page with some ground espresso, and black soot

I created three styles of cards with three versions of the painting.

For the above, I would add my paint in and then wipe it away allowing it to stain the paper and give it a night tinted look. Once I was happy with how it looked I decided to distress the edges of the paper, using distress oxides and regular inks.

adding the flowers too some previously created gel pressed backgrounds

The cards themselves were larger than normal, cards measured 5 ½ X 7 ¾. I used some of my previously created gel backgrounds and really did not want to trim much off of them, thus keeping as much of the detail as possible. I chose the background to match or enhance the flowers.

A close up of one of the finished cards,

Each gel pressed backgrounds were added to the card flat using a liquid adhesive. For a little dimension popped up the painted flowers using some foam tape. To complete the card I used a simple hello die and layered a few of them together to create dimension also adding a mirror layer to the mix.

I hope you were able to get some inspiration from the above and welcome your comments. Please also make sure to use the links below for your crafting needs.

Have a Great Week!

Tuesday with Tara {take 213}

Happy Tuesday! Today I’m sharing an art journal spread I did while I was on vacation at the beach recently. I had packed a tote with my Dina Wakley paints & a few other supplies, along with my Media Journal, Scribble Sticks & some Collage Sayings, which ended up being a foundation for these pages.

Healing art journal spread featuring Dina Wakley Media

I was inspired by the many shades of blue when I looked at the ocean… it was stunning, so I chose to work almost completely with blues for these pages (I didn’t have ALL the Dina Wakley blues… but I’ve since ordered the ones I was missing! LOL.) You’ll see on these pages: Sky, Turquoise, Lapis & Night together with Elephant & Mineral). I also used some modeling paste I had packed (similar to this one by Ranger) Washi Tape & a Glue Stick. I neglected to pack gel/multi medium and white paint, so that challenged me a bit… but I managed to make it work.

When I started I just knew I wanted to work with blues… so I just started to randomly apply blue paint to a page, overlapping and blending colors as I went. I had some stencils with me, so thought I would lift color off the background with a baby wipe afterwards (I had a mixed blue background, painted over it with elephant, then placed the stencil on top while it was still slightly wet and lifted color through the stencil with a baby wipe). I selected some sayings from the collage tissue and decided I would work with those on my pages, so placed them (not glued them!) on the first phase of my background before continuing on. Here’s step one of the left page:

I decided to sketch out some rough circles for the facing page, filling them afterwards with different shades of blue. I then selected collage sentiments and sorted out a rough layout. I typically forget to snap progress photos when I work in my art journal (especially when it’s been so long since I’ve done it, as was the case this time!) but I wanted to remember where each piece fit, so a quick photo on my phone was a great reference tool 🙂

After filling in the circles, I painted around them with elephant to tie the pages together, then decided to add a circle to the left page to anchor the collage words I had chosen for that page. I added black outlines to my circles with a combination of Scribble Sticks and Stablio Water color pencil. I sketched my title ‘healing’ the same way, then went over it with a black alcohol marker to really make it pop. Details like washi tape and texture paste through the stencil were added to both pages.

I also decided to try my hand at sketching out a loose figure similar to the ones Dina draws. Because I had no white paint, I cut some book print in roughly the same shape and glued it down inside my figure, adding some shading with Scribble Sticks.

I finished with some ‘scribbly journaling’ which overlaps so it’s more of a design element than being actually legible.  I only had a chisel tip marker with me, so I’m not thrilled with my writing… as Dina says, “done is better than perfect” so I made it work. For me it was just a bit of therapy text about my journey of healing so far, since I was recently diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. You can visit my personal blog to see a closer look at each individual page of this spread if you’d like!

Inky (& painty) hugs,

Tara

Happy Tuesday!

Today’s card came about when inked up some die cut bookprint paper for another card I was working on and then decided I liked it better for that project left white(ish)… so I pulled out my fave Good Idea floral stamp by Dina Wakley and it turned into this!

I’ve had a lot of health issues lately and along with them a pretty big creative block (not to mention lack of energy) so it was fun to just go with the flow on this card… let the quirky ideas come out, like when I looked at the big blossom I’d colored with Scribble Sticks and wondered if the faces on Dina’s washi tape would fit on the petals (I was drawn to the tape more than usual because I’m taking high doses of prednisone right now and have a big round moon face myself because of it). Spoiler alert- they fit and I kinda love the weirdness of it!

I finished off the card with a die cut ‘smile’ from Tim Holtz’s Shadow Script #2 set. Both the die cut and the flower/leaves are mounted on 3D foam squares for texture, to allow them to be slightly raised over the thin jute I wrapped around the card. A bit of glitter (Nuvo) and a metal charm finish it all off. And you know what, it’s quirky and it makes me smile, even with my steroid induced moon face 🙂

I hope you find some time to create something that makes you smile this week!

Inky hugs,

Tara
